Debut in The Netherlands 1958 : The Lost Recordings [remastered] (2022)

"With the support of the American State Department, the Dave Brubeck Quartet, including new members Joe Morello and Eugene Wright, began a major tour of Europe early in 1958. Their first concert in the Netherlands was held on 26 February in the legendary Concertgebouw Hall in Amsterdam, usually reserved for performances of classical music. Since 1951 and the collaboration between Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond, the band had gained a stunning reputation. In 1954, Dave Brubeck was featured on the cover of Time magazine. Rumor has it that Duke Ellington knocked on Brubeck?s hotel door to congratulate him. Brubeck is said to have responded, ?It should have been you.? He dedicated one of his most famous pieces, ?The Duke?, included on this album, to his fellow pianist. That winter evening of 1958, the four musicians, all in their late thirties, took the stage of the Concertgebouw. After some timid applause, Desmond kicked off with the melancholy, sophisticated theme of ?Two Part Contention?." (theingroove.com)

1975: The Duets (1975)

"Although Brubeck and Desmond made many rewarding recordings together, this was their only duo album. Brubeck's lyricism throughout these sessions will surprise critics who label him as "bombastic," while Desmond, known for his pure dry-toned alto sax, throws a few curves to his longtime fans. The loping waltz treatment of "Alice in Wonderland" and a delicate interpretation of the Mexican folk song "The Blue Dove" contrast with their abstract approach to "Stardust." The especially adventurous introduction to Brubeck's oriental blues "Koto Song" opens with Desmond providing percussion by tapping on his instrument's keys. Their return visit to "Balcony Rock," a collaborative effort from the 1950s, is an absolutely buoyant miniature. Brubeck performs his "Summer Song" in a mood of celebration, unlike the wistful recording with Louis Armstrong. The memorable interaction during "You Go to My Head" should be considered one of the high points of their respective careers." (Ken Dryden, Allmusic; 4,5 uit 5 sterren)

Skylark (1974)

Geremasterde uitgave van "Skylark" van Paul Desmond, opgenomen in december 1973. "For those who missed it the first time, Desmond remakes "Take Ten" -- without the Middle Eastern elements -- "Romance de Amor" is eventually dominated by Szabo, and the inclusion of "Was a Sunny Day" proves that Desmond's involvement with the music of Paul Simon in 1970 was not a passing infatuation. Don Sebesky is credited with the "arrangements" but his orchestrating hand is not felt except for a single solo cello (George Ricci) in an adaptation of Purcell ("Music for a While"). It's a cautious change of pace for Desmond, although the fiercer context into which he was placed doesn't really fire his imagination". (Richard S. Ginell, Allmusic).

Jazz Goes To College (1954)

Toen de plaat werd uitgebracht verscheen Dave Brubeck op de cover van Time als "the most exciting new jazz artist at work today".
