"Alain Mion (1947) is a French pianist, composer, arranger, and jazz singer. Influenced by Bobby Timmons, Ray Charles and Les McCann, his style varies between jazz, soul jazz and "funky music". He created the legendary jazz funk group Cortex in 1974, before embarking upon a career under his own name in 1982. His albums are known worldwide, notably "Troupeau Bleu" and "Volume 2" with Cortex (re-released several times and sampled by many musical artists and DJs). Also popular were albums under his own name, including "Pheno-Men" which was used as a theme for many radio programs, "Alain Mion in New York" recorded with David Binney and Marc Johnson, and "Some Soul Food" recorded in Stockholm (Sweden) with Patrik Boman and Ronnie Gardiner. Alain Mion's and Cortex's records are often played on contemporary jazz stations such as KCRW in Los Angeles and The Jazz Groove Radio in San Francisco." (Wikipedia)

"Jazzviolist Feldman heeft een enorme staat van dienst. Hij is een veelgevraagd sessiemuzikant in de pop- en countrywereld, een gevierd klassiek violist én geniet groot aanzien binnen de New Yorkse jazzscène. Daarbij ontsnapt niemand aan John Zorn (Feldman is oa lid van het Masada Stringtrio), maar speelt er ook met bijv. John Abercrombie en Dave Douglas. Deze invloeden, en dan vooral het streven naar een samenbrengen van elementen uit al deze muziek maken het geluid van Feldman vrij uniek. Zeker in de 22 minuten durende openingstrack "Arcade" is hij daar ook sterk in geslaagd. Cimbalen en bas openen waarna Feldman via één repetitieve toon een Velvetiaanse spanningsboog op- en afbouwt. Op de rest van het album neigt hij naar modern klassiek; hij verkent op een avant-gardistische wijze de geluidsmogelijkheden van zijn instrument, maar laat zijn spel steeds uiterst zuiver klinken. "Recorded without much rehearsing time, this album is another example of the magic of jazz, which can produce endearing music even when the musicians hardly know each other. Guitarist Samo Salamon hired the trio Open Loose (Tony Malaby (ts), Mark Helias (b), and Tom Rainey (d). In itself, the threesome is already a solid warrant of quality. Helias has an impressive facility on his instrument, Rainey's imagination seems endless, and Malaby would be hard pressed to deliver a vapid solo. As for the leader, he readily acknowledges Bill Frisell as a major influence, but ends up sounding more like John Scofield, or even John Abercrombie ("The Lonely Tune"). However, his jagged and linear delivery shows that he might be up to finding his own voice. Salamon's wit is not only displayed in song titles and his comping, but shows that he is quick to find a meaningful commentary to his cohorts' discourse. New York's hotste tenorsaxofonist is op 29 november 2010 als speciale gast van het Harmen Fraanje Avalonia Trio te gast bij JazzPodium Drienerlo, op de UT in Enschede. Zijn eigen Apparitions is, alleen al door de line-up (sax, bas, twee drummers) bijzonder. Tweede drummer John Hollenbeck is trouwens ook creatief in de weer met vibrafoon, melodica en andere percussie. "One of the most significant tenor saxophonists working today, Malaby's singular technique makes him one of the foremost improvisers of his generation. Where many of his peers mistake histrionics for intensity, Malaby values subtleties in volume, timbre and tone above dexterity and speed. Though his melodious phrasing often careens at a quicksilver pace, his nuanced attention to detail sets him apart from the masses of post-Coltrane acolytes.
