"Dit is een van de eerste keren dat gitarist Pat Martino zijn groep heeft uitgebreid tot een kwintet. Daartoe nodigde hij tenor saxofonist Joe Lovano, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, bassist Christian McBride en drummer Lewis Nash uit voor een driedaagse opnamesessie in Manhattan. Think Tank is een hommage aan John Coltrane geworden. De cd is niet zozeer aan diens spel opgedragen, maar meer aan de persoon Coltrane zelf. Net als Coltrane is ook Martino spiritueel bewust en op een intensieve manier bezig met nieuwe ontdekkingen in de muziek. Daartoe verzamelde Martino een achttal stukken, waaronder Coltrane's "Africa", waarvan hij vond dat die Coltrane's geest uitstraalden. Het titelnummer is zelfs opgebouwd volgens een van de wiskundige formules die Coltrane hanteerde om zijn stukken te componeren. Het saxofoonspel vormt zeer zeker niet de overhand op deze CD, het gaat hierbij meer om de totale uitstraling. ""State of Mind" favors a straight-ahead hard bop/post-bop format above the soul jazz Ellis is known for -- and that approach serves the improviser well whether he is turning his attention to John Coltrane's "Grand Central," Charlie Parker's "Barbados," or the exuberant "Sunshowers" (a lesser-known piece that was written by bassist Clint Houston and recorded by trumpeter Woody Shaw in the late '70s). The hard-swinging Ellis also embraces George Gershwin's "Summertime," which is one of those Tin Pan Alley gems that has been beaten to death over the years -- Keepnews' liner notes describe "Summertime" as a song that "might seem almost ready to be retired." But Ellis' Coltrane-ish, slightly abstract version of "Summertime" (which uses a rare, seldom heard arrangement by saxman Noel Jewkes) doesn't sound generic or common. The album isn't groundbreaking, but in terms of enthusiasm, chops, and soulfulness, Ellis comes through." (Alex Henderson, Allmusic)
Gitarist Hall, al jaren meester van de subtiel geplaatste, prachtig rond klinkende noten, overtrof zichzelf die avond in januari 2000, omringd door topkrachten die ook op de toppen van hun kunnen spelen.
