Booker Telleferro Ervin II (Denison, 31 oktober 1930 - New York, 31 augustus 1970) was een Amerikaanse jazz-tenorsaxofonist, componist en orkestleider. Als saxofonist was hij autodidact. Ervin en Mingus zijn op deze cd niet samen te horen, hoewel Booker Ervin Van 1958 tot en met 1962 in de band van Charles Mingus speelde.

Het Bud Powell Trio was een belangrijke fase in het begin van de loopbaa van Charles Mingus. Cut just six months after the bassist's demise, this album was the first Mingus Dynasty recording, and it has its moments. Such alumni as altoist John Handy, trombonist Jimmy Knepper, trumpeter Jimmy Owens, and tenorman Joe Farrell meet up with two members of Mingus' last major band (pianist Don Pullen and drummer Dannie Richmond), plus bassist Charlie Haden, who ably fills in for the late bandleader. In addition to "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" (which was becoming popular at the time), the septet performs three numbers from Mingus' collaboration with Joni Mitchell, plus "Boogie Stop Shuffle" and "My Jelly Roll Soul." "Born out of Mingus' last band, the Adams/Pullen Quartet took off from its onetime leader's eclectic and fervent musical approach to form its own provocative and fertile take on hard bop and the avant-garde. Opnamen van de beroemde Europese tournee van het sextet dat ook te horen is op "Cornell 1964". Trompettist Johnny Coles is nog te zien; even later moest hij wegens ziekte afhaken. Maar hij is nog de minst illustere naam in dit sextet. Eric Dolphy excelleert op zowel altsax, fluit en basklarinet - slechts drie maanden later zou hij overlijden. Clifford Jordan (tenorsax) is ook in bloedvorm. De muziek toegankelijk en baanbrekend tegelijk - er gaat naast intensiteit gewoon erg veel plezier van uit. Dat zie je ook aan de vaak breeduit glimlachende Mingus, die toch ook om z'n nurksheid bekend stond. De opnamen, bij elkaar twee uur, zijn gemaakt in België, Noorwegen en Zweden. Delen van deze opnamen zijn al eerder versnipperd en slordig gemasterd uitgebracht. Dit is de eerste keer dat het zorgvuldig gerestaureerd en met liefde bij elkaar is gezet. Want dat is het kenmerk van deze Jazz Icons-serie: de DVD's zijn aan alle kanten perfect, tot de uitgebreide toelichting en duiding in het foto-rijke boekwerkje aan toe.

Adams seems to glide effortlessly up and down his horn, his patented licks never tiresome. Most of the original tunes are blowing vehicles, which work well with the superb talent represented here. Pullen is more pensive than usual, but always effective. The lyrical flute work by Adams is a pleasure, but it lacks the verve of his saxophone playing.
