The album title signifies the geographical region in upstate New York where these players currently reside, ánd highlights the notion that the area has always offered a place of solace for artists -- especially musicians. Hudson is a modern update that harkens back - in feel - to the great Blue Note sessions of the '60s, when a group of jazz masters could come together to play good music and let off some steam. "ECM, host to many European-American dialogues, has released a very classy example between Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel and the all-star US quartet of Brad Mehldau (p), Ambrose Akinmusire (t), Larry Grenadier (b) and Brian Blade (d). Muthspiel, on electric & acoustic guitars, wrote all the tracks except Mehldaus daintily swinging "Wolfgangs Waltz", and the music mingles echoes of Kenny Wheeler, the classical guitar sound of Ralph Towner and the songlike one of Pat Metheny, plus the quickwittedness of the mid-60s Miles Davis group. The title track is Wheeler-like in its transformations of a poignantly simple motif, and the graceful swerves of Akinmusires phrasing. "Triad Song" has a warm pop-ballad melody and sleek solos from Mehldau and Muthspiel; "Boogaloo" is a prodding laid-back Milesian groove peppered with Blades snare flurries; and the initially dreamy "Den Wheeler Den Kenny" moves in and out of understated swing. "De eerste plaat van John Scofield voor weer actieve label Impulse! is behalve erg fraai ook wat droevig. De aanleiding voor de gitarist om het kwartet waarmee hij in de jaren 90 werkte weer bij elkaar te roepen, was de dood van zijn zoon, die in 2013 aan kanker stierf. Het inspireerde hem behalve tot de fraaie blues "Mr. Puffy" tot acht andere stukken waarin Scofield lijkt terug te grijpen naar de muziek uit zijn eigen jeugd. Teder en toch swingend verwijst de gitarist naar oude country- en blueswijsjes en komt er ook een beetje soul-jazz voorbij. De hernieuwde samenwerking met drummer Bill Stewart en vooral tenorsaxofonist Joe Lovano pakt erg goed uit. Fraai zijn de unisono partijen tussen gitaar en saxofoon. Lovano met mooi zwevende noten en Scofield met zijn ingehouden melancholieke spel. Het geluid is semi-akoestisch, met ook een voorname rol voor de nieuwkomer hier, Larry Grenadier. "Voorjaar 2012 verscheen "Ode", het langverwachte album van het Brad Mehldau Trio dat na 2005, het jaar dat drummer Jeff Ballard Jorge Rossy verving, niets vers had uitgebracht. Op "Ode" eerde de pianist in nieuwe composities allerlei zaken die hij bewondert. Muzikaal verrassend was de pakkende, toegankelijke pianotriomuziek niet, maar waar de stijlverrassing uitblijft, is er altijd de verwondering over zijn bijna onaardse vereniging van een verbluffende techniek en intense melancholie. "Ode" had met "Where Do You Start" net zo goed als dubbel-CD kunnen worden uitgebracht, met enig verschil dat Mehldau zich op dit vervolg richt op het naar zijn hand zetten van bestaande composities. Daarin is hij ongelooflijk vaardig. Naast mooie bewerkingen van Surfjan Stevens, Sonny Rollins en Elvis Costello, schiet vooral "Hey Joe" eruit. De prettig luie timing en valse akkoorden doen recht aan de rockstandard. Zelfs als zijn gummivingers zich even later in een samba woelen." (Tim Sprangers, Volkskrant; 4 uit 5 sterren)
"Pianist Brad Mehldau maakte sinds de jaren 90 vooral naam met een serie trio-opnames onder de veelzeggende titel "The Art Of The Trio". Geen pianist sinds de legendarische Bill Evans is in staat geweest dit genre zo vooruit te stuwen als Mehldau. De enige wijziging in de samenstelling vond 10 jaar geleden plaats, toen drummer Jorge Rossy werd vervangen door Jeff Ballard, wat de muziek van het trio fysieker en energieker maakte. Naast Ballard treffen we op dit nieuwe album nog altijd oudgediende Larry Grenadier op de bas aan. Zoals we inmiddels van hem gewend zijn covert Brad hier niet alleen klassieke jazznummers, ditmaal onder meer Cole Porter en Charlie Parker, maar ook enkele non-jazz stukken, waaronder maar liefst twee nummers van Paul McCartney: het Beatles-liedje "And I Love Her" en het recentere "My Valentine".
