"Thelonious Monk was in de vroege jaren zestig twee keer in Nederland. Dit tot groot genoegen van de Nederlandse Monk liefhebbers, die zich tot dan toe moesten behelpen met opnamen van deze enigmatische jazzpionier. Zijn eerste concerten in Nederland op 15 april 1961, in het Scheveningse Kurhaus en het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw waren zo'n succes dat organisator Lou van Rees besloot nog 2 concerten te organiseren aan het einde van de tournee in mei. Op deze CD presenteert het Nederlands Jazz Archief het tweede nog nooit eerder uitgegeven concert van 20 mei 1961 in het Concertgebouw, waarop door de muzikanten vol vuur wordt gesoleerd, en dat bijzonder eindigt met twee solostukken van Monk. De CD bevat ook 6 bonustracks: de opnamen die Monk voor de AVRO televisie maakte in de Bussumse Studio Ireneop 15 april 1961. Wederom nog nooit eerder op cd uitgebracht materiaal. "Nog niet eerder uitgebrachte opnamen van de Thelonious Monk-soundtrack voor de film Les liaisons dangereuses. De mensen achter deze heruitgave noemen de ontdekking van deze banden van grote historische (jazz)betekenis. Deze sessie is op 27 juli 1959 opgenomen. Op twee nummers speelt Barney Wilen mee op tenorsax. Oorspronkelijk sloot Romano een contract met Monk voor de soundtrack. Door persoonlijke omstandigheden was het twijfelachtig of die zijn verplichtingen kon nakomen. Romano regelde daarom dat Art Blakey ook een soundtrack maakte. Door de twee soundtracks hadden Vadim en Romano ruim voldoende muziek voor de film. Bij de film zijn van beide soundtracks gedeeltes gebruikt. De soundtrack van Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers is wel eerder volledig op CD uitgebracht. De opname van het Thelonious Monk Quintet is bijzonder genoeg. Er bestaan geen andere opnamen waarop Barney Wilen met Monk speelt. Bovendien zijn opnamen met het ritme-duo Sam Jones en Art Taylor zeldzaam." (Ben IJpma, Jazzflits)
In Europa werden in de jaren '60 de grote Amerikaanse jazzartiesten als helden onthaald en viel hen een behandeling ten deel die in het verlengde lag van wat gebruikelijk was in de wereld van klassieke muziek. Concerten werden gehouden op chique klassieke concertpodia en werden regelmatig vastgelegd door TV-camera's. Ook werd er vaak een optreden gepland in een klinische TV-studio. In thuisland de VS was dit zeer ongebruikelijk. Het is de oorzaak dat de Jazz Icons-serie voornamelijk Europees bronmateriaal gebruikt. Zoals deze twee optredens van de invloedrijke, hoogst eigenzinnige pianist in kwartetopstelling, inderdaad klinisch vastgelegd in Noorwegen en Denemarken. Monk wordt vereenzelvigd met haast kubistische composities als "Epistrophy", hier ook op de setlist, en niet zozeer met standards. Daarom is het uiterst interessant te horen wat hij doet in een lange bewerking van de standard "Lulu's Back In Town". Inderdaad: hij maakt er met z'n altijd wat hoekige stijl een typisch Monks-stuk van.
Eén van de beste heruitgaven van 2016, volgens jazzspeciaalzaak Jazz Center in Den Haag. "Tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse is best known for his work with Thelonious Monk, playing with the enigmatic pianist and composer during Monk's Columbia years from 1959 until 1970. Rouse's sound with Monk was so fluid and smooth that's it's easy to forget how many eccentric, jagged turns he had to navigate night after night, and that Rouse did it with quiet, steady grace is a testament both to his sax playing and to the space Monk built into his puzzle box compositions. This calm, workmanlike set, recorded in 1960 and originally released in 1961 on Epic, clearly shows that he could rise to the occasion. Working with a rhythm section of Dave Bailey on drums, Peck Morrison on bass, and Billy Gardner on piano (this was actually Gardner's debut in a recording studio), Rouse's sax lines seem to float effortlessly over the top of things, feeling less urgent and angular than his work with Monk." "Clifford Brown was incredibly influential for someone who died so young. The Fats Navarro-minded trumpeter was only 25 when a car accident claimed his life in 1956, but his influence remained: Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Woody Shaw, Donald Byrd, and Carmell Jones were among the many trumpet titans who were heavily influenced by Brown. In the early to mid-'50s, Brown kept getting more and more exciting, year by year. That means that when it comes to Brown's CDs, excellent doesn't necessarily mean essential. Recorded in 1953, the material on this 18-track CD isn't quite as essential as some of Brown's work with drummer Max Roach in 1954 and 1955, but is still superb. The trumpet icon is heard at two different sessions. Brown's solos are consistently expressive; he swings unapologetically hard on up-tempo fare, but is quite lyrical on the ballads. One thing all of the performances have in common is a strong Fats Navarro influence." (Alex Henderson, Allmusic)
"This should not be confused with the original motion picture soundtrack to the 1988 film of the same name. The original disc only included six performances, half of which were edited due to the stringent time constraints of vinyl. This 1996 CD version not only restores all of the previously abridged performances, but also adds a trio of sides, two of which ("I Didn't Know About You: Take 1" and "Green Chimneys") are issued here for the first time. The band featured here includes: Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Ben Riley (drums), and Larry Gales (bass). This would be the final quartet Monk would assemble to record with in the studio. While far from being somber, this unit retained a mature flavor which would likewise place Monk's solos in a completely new context. In addition to the quartet sides, Straight, No Chaser contains two unaccompanied piano solos: "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "This Is My Story, This Is My Song.""
