"In 2012, guitarist Pat Metheny won a Grammy for his album "Unity Band". It featured Chris Potter (ts, ss, bcl, fl), Ben Williams (b), and Antonio Sanchez (d). A year later, the Unity Group returned with "Kin ", which found the ensemble expanded with multi-instrumentalist Giulio Carmassi. Arriving in 2016, "The Unity Sessions" showcases that expanded group live in a gorgeously produced performance at New York's Black Box Theatre. Here, we get cuts off both albums, as well as songs culled from Metheny's lengthy career. These run the gamut from acoustic pieces ("Adagia") to moody, groove-oriented modal fusion ("Roofdogs") to atmospheric world music-inflected pieces ("Come and See") and more. Elsewhere, the ensemble combines Coltrane-esque spirituality and African rhythms on "On Day One," and dives into the flamenco-steeped anthem "Rise Up." Opmerkelijke soundtrack bij een al even opmerkelijke film. Alles aan de film van Alejandro González Iñárritu straalt ambitie uit, en een aanstekelijke zucht om dingen ánders aan te pakken dan iedereen. En het werkt fantastisch. Dat geldt ook voor de soundtrack, want die bestaat voor het grootste deel uit 'slechts' het drumwerk van Antonio Sanchez. Deze vooral van Pat Metheny's groep bekende slagwerker is zelfs een aantal keren in de film te zien. 'Alleen maar drums, is dat niet enorm saai?', horen we u denken. Niet als je Antonio Sanchez heet. Iñárritu heeft 'm natuurlijk niet voor niets gevraagd (nadat hij 'm gespot had tijdens een Metheny-concert). Sanchez roffelt soms als een bezetene, legt dan weer raadselachtige accenten, doet vrijwel altijd wat anders dan een standaard drumritme spelen. De soundtrack is aangevuld met enkele (fragmenten van) klassieke werken van Mahler, Ravel, Tsjaikovski, Adams en Rachmaninov.
Supergitarist Pat Metheny heeft nu twee studio-albums gemaakt met zijn Unity-group. Een band die een avontuurlijker jazzvorm laat horen dan zijn voormalige Pat Metheny Group. De Group zocht graag het behaaglijke op, Unity eerder het stekelige. Dit met dank aan de explosieve drummer Antonio Sanchez (kijk de film Birdman en beluister de bijbehorende soundtrack en u weet wat we bedoelen) en het veelzijdige saxspel van Chris Potter (die vroeger schitterde in o.a. de groep van bassist Dave Holland). Na enkele wereldtournees is een zeer hecht spelende club ontstaan en op deze zeer intiem en dicht op de huid in een klein New Yorks theatertje gefilmde set laat horen wat er dan gebeurd met de muziek. De bezieling en het spelplezier spat eraf. Ook als Pat zijn guitar synth voor de dag haalt of deze groep een Metheny-klassieker als "Two Folk Songs #1" (in Nederland bekend als tune van Koot & Bie in de Juinen-periode) bij de hoorns vat. De bekende saxlijn van wijlen Michael Brecker wordt treffend neergezet door Potter.

The lineup reads like a who's-who in Latin jazz, showcasing the founding fathers of the style, and the young lions of tomorrow, including Dave Samuels, Paquito d'Rivera, Jimmy Heath, Avishai Cohen, Berklee chum Antonio Sanchéz, Edward Simon, and Pernell Saturnino. The record is sonically vibrant and clear, and the authorship is consistently excellent. The performances are as first rate as one might expect of players of such a caliber.
