""Valleys & Mountains" is het derde studioalbum van Rymden (Zweeds voor ‘ruimte’), het trio van [de Noorse toetsenist] Bugge Wesseltoft [en de Zweedse voormalige Esbjörn Svensson Trio-ritmesectie] Dan Berglund en Magnus Öström en laat een nieuwe fase horen in de ontwikkeling van de band. "Valleys & Mountains" heeft een meer akoestisch en ingetogen karakter. Dit sluit wellicht aan bij de voor dit ‘ruimtetrio’ andere, aardse thematiek. De inspiratie komt, heel 'Nordic', van de natuur, getuige titels als "The Hike", "A Walk In The Woods", "The Mountain" en "Songs From The Valley". Het geluid is donker (Berglunds machtige basgeluid!) en weids en toch weer typisch Rymden. Neem openingsnummer "The Hike" dat is opgebouwd rond een pianoriff en al snel overgaat in een opgeruimde, wat logge swing, waarin je lekker kunt hangen. De surprise is de gastbijdrage van John Scofield met een meesterlijke lange gitaarsolo." (Jazzenzo)
Rymden is een samenwerking van de Noorse toetsenist Bugge Wesseltoft met de Zweedse ritmesectie Dan Berglund en Magnus Öström. Die laatste twee waren verweesd achtergebleven na de verdrinkingsdood van de naamgever van het Esbjörn Svensson Trio (ofwel e.s.t.). De drie maakten twee veelgeroemde albums vol avontuurlijke, melodieuze progjazzcomposities. Nu heeft de groep materiaal van die twee studio-albums, aangevuld met enkele nieuwe composities gearrangeerd voor een combinatie met symfonie-orkest. Dat orkest in kwestie is het Noors Radio Symfonieorkest, dat zich veelal kortweg KORK noemt. Er is een spannende invulling gegeven aan de rol van KORK, wat dit zoveel meer maakt dan 'jazztrio met orkestbegeleiding'. Het levert enerverende symfónische progjazz op. Vaak vervangt bij traditionele symfonische arrangementen het orkest de toetsenpartijen, niet zo in bijvoorbeeld het van “Space Sailors” afkomstige “Free As A Bird”, dat een lange virtuoze synthesizersolo van Wesseltoft laat horen.
"Esbjörn Svensson, the Swedish original who turned crossovers between jazz, pop and classical music into lasting art with EST, would have got around to this orchestral venture himself but for his accidental death in 2008. With its shapely themes, subtle pacing and big climaxes, his popular trios music was ideal material, eloquently confirmed here by arranger Hans Ek, the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and four star jazz soloists, including brilliant Finnish pianist Iiro Rantala (Trio Toykeat). Svenssons own arrangement embellishes the rocking theme of "Dodge The Dodo", and the fugal EST favourite "When God Created The Coffee Break" has inquisitive woodwind lines crossing the Bach-derived bassline. Marius Nesets tenor murmurs amid pedal-steel glimmers on "Seven Days Of Falling", and Eks swooping flutes and deep strings sway over the characteristic smack and patter of original EST drummer Magnus Öströms brushwork on "Viaticum". "Magnus Öström, the late Esbjörn Svenssons drummer and childhood friend, named this album for musics power to pull up his plummeting spirit after the Swedish pianists death in 2008. Like its predecessors, "Parachute" celebrates prog rock and the Pat Metheny Group, retains the same strong lineup including Andreas Hourdakis (g) and Daniel Karlsson (p) and has something of a generic air. Öströms themes often curl lyrical guitar leads over strutting piano ostinati and pepper them with modulations. His tom-tom fills constantly push the Methenyesque melody of "Dog On The Beach"; "Walkabout Bug" has a childlike charm despite its metronomic pulse and the fast-ticking title track swells to an EST-like rapture via good solos from Hourdakis and Karlsson. Trumpeter Mathias Eicks guest spot on "The Shore Of Unsure" clothes the inexorable dance floor groove in a sensuous gleam." "Guitarist Max Schultz applies his Santana-like chops to several Trane standards on Plays Coltrane. (...) Schultz' ambitious original "Song for John" could serve as an overture for the album since it contains and suggests thematic and stylistic elements (eg, the four-note bass figure from "Acknowledgement") that recall several Coltrane tunes. Plays Coltrane is generally a quartet album but there are a few departures from that format. The ballad "Central Park West" is marred slightly because Schultz and pianist Bobo Stenson initially can't quite get out of each other's way, like dancers stepping on each other's toes. They overcome their missteps, however, and their flawless simpatico on "After the Rain" leads one to clamor for an album of duets. There are no missteps, however, on the excellent bass-guitar duet on "Welcome" between Schultz and bassist Dan Berglund's full-throated, relentless arco." (All About Jazz)
