"The Tunisian composer and oud virtuoso's follow-up to his excellent ECM debut, "Barzakh". Like its predecessor, it contains original material that mixes Arabic music and jazz improvisation and features a stellar band comprised of some of Turkey's finest musicians (clarinetist Barbaros Erkose, nay (reed flute) player Kudsi Erguner, and, as at "Barzakh", Lassad Hosni (perc)). In contrast to "Barzakh"'s livelier mood, though, the sound here is more meditative and even stark at times, especially on solo flights by both Brahem ("Iram Retrouvee") and Erkose ("Etincelles") and by way of Erguner's ethereal improvisations ("Diversion"). The pace picks up on the sympathetically played and joyous ensemble piece "Conte de L'incroyable Amour" and on the impassioned Brahem and Erkose duet, "Nayzak." ECM's typically sparse and airy production compliments Brahem's ascetic material without making it sound too dry. A wonderful album that, upon repeated listening, reveals many transcendent moments." Album uit 1995 waarop ney-bespeler Erguner solo te horen is (de ney is een Arabische fluitsoort). Hij speelt Sufi-muziek in oeroude klassieke Ottomaanse stijl, gebaseerd op het modale systeem dat 'maqam' wordt genoemd. Dit is geen geschikte plaat als introductie in Turkse klassieke muziek, maar het is het neusje van de zalm voor de liefhebber. Bovendien is het in al z'n verstilling zeer rustgevend.
"Of Constantinopel in 1453 ten prooi viel aan de mohammedanen of juist werd gered van de christenen, is een kwestie van perspectief. In elk geval kwam in dat jaar een einde aan het Byzantijnse rijk, dat de Grieks-Romeinse erfenis had veiliggesteld voor de Renaissance. In de stad die tegenwoordig Istanbul heet, wist alleen Galata zich als een Frans-Italiaanse enclave te handhaven. De christelijke vlek in het Ottomaanse rijk prikkelde de fantasie van twee muziekgroepen. Wie weet klonken er de hoofse arabesken van Dufay en Binchois waarin de Franse musici van Doulce Mémoire zich hebben gespecialiseerd. Het Turkse ensemble van Kudsi Erguner verkent op zijn beurt de inheemse makam, met micro-intervallen en improvisatie. Sterk punt: ieder doet waarin hij uitblinkt, wat in dit soort cross-over niet altijd vanzelf spreekt.
