LongGone (2022)

"Ze zijn inmiddels alweer langer bij elkaar dan tijdens hun eerste incarnatie. Saxofonist Joshua Redman vormde in 1994 een band vol young neo-bop lions met pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride en drummer Brian Blade. Een samenstelling die een kort leven beschoren was omdat alle leden individueel snel uitgroeiden tot invloedrijke jazzmuzikanten en bandleiders. Het enige wapenfeit Moodswing (1994) kreeg in 2020 een verrassend vervolg met RoundAgain (2020), een doorwrocht jazzalbum van vier wereldberoemde en gelauwerde muzikanten. De supergroep komt opnieuw bijeen op Long Gone. Even ontspannen als inventief wordt er gemusiceerd in vijf nieuwe stukken die lonken naar de stijlvaste neo-bop van weleer. Nummers die altijd swingen en tegelijk nooit recht-toe-recht-aan worden gespeeld. Het album eindigt met een live-uitvoering van Rejoice dat afkomstig is van Moodswing en werd gespeeld tijdens de tournee naar aanleiding van RoundAgain." (Muziekweb)

"This expansive live release finds pianist Corea working with Christian McBride (b) and Brian Blade (d), and the three have an uncanny connection, filling space with gorgeous and subtle phrasings, gliding through all manner of styles with a seemingly effortless elegance and freshness. The 3CD set was recorded live at various places around the world, but has a remarkable sonic coherency. It might be too much to call it a summation of Corea's legacy, but it does have the slight feel of a retrospective. The band revisits classic Corea compositions like "Spain" and covering several tunes from the Great American Songbook, a couple of Thelonious Monk tunes, a previously unissued Corea composition, the half-hour "Piano Sonata: The Moon," where the trio shows its ability to move between scored and improvised sections with breathtaking ease, and even a take on Russian composer Scriabin's "Op. 11 No. 9" that manages to breathe and flow without sounding like a forced fusion." "De Amerikaan Christian McBride is al vanaf de jaren 90 een veelgevraagde, even virtuoze als diverse bassist. Zo speelde hij o.a. met Freddie Hubbard, Joe Henderson, Diana Krall en Sting. Sinds 1995 verscheen daarnaast menig album onder eigen naam, vol uiteenlopende stijlen als fusion, bigband en neo-bop. "Out There" is het eerste album van zijn pianotrio. Met aan de toetsen het nog jonge talent Christian Sands klinkt dat traditioneler dan ooit, vooral omdat Sands met zijn bluesy en robuuste spel teruggaat naar bebophelden als Oscar Peterson en Bud Powell. Daarnaast drijft dit drietal (met op drums Ulysses Owens Jr.) elkaar soms zo hoog op dat je in bijvoorbeeld "Hallelujah Time", zelfs in de huiskamer de behoefte krijgt om hen aan te sporen met yeahs en applaus na iedere halsbrekende solo. Maar de groep kan ook verstild en sfeervol spelen, zoals in het abstracte "My Favorite Things".
