De hoogtepunten zijn onder andere Coltrane's vurige pianosolo die spirituele jazz, bebop en de modale blues tegenkomt. Disc twee bestaat uit twee John Coltrane-composities: Het titelnummer van "Africa/Brass" uit 1961 en "Leo" van "Infinity" uit 1966. Al met al zijn het tempo, de texturen, het explosieve drama, de virtuositeit en de grenzeloze creativiteit van het concert ongeëvenaard. Het "The Carnegie Hall Concert"-pakket bevat een uitstekend, inzichtelijk essay van Lauren Du Graf en een reminiscentie van Michel. Eén der meest betreurenswaardige gebeurtenissen in de jazz in 2007 was het heengaan van Andrew Hill, eigenzinnig pianist, wiens spel even bonkig als poetisch kon zijn en die altijd prachtige groepen om zich heen verzamelde die de ruimte kregen uit te blinken in hoogst originele arrangementen. "Point Of Departure" is z'n bekendste plaat, vlak voor z'n dood (die hij aan voelde komen) maakte hij het indrukwekkende "Time Lines". "Compulsion!!!!!" (één van z'n vele platen met uitroeptekens in de titel) is wellicht een van z'n meest eigenzinnige. Met tenorist John Gilmore, vooral bekend om z'n werk met Sun Ra, heeft hij een lekker tegendraadse muzikant in z'n band, die echter behoorlijk in toom wordt gehouden. Mede door de Afrikaanse percussie van Nadi Qamar en Renaud Simmons blijft het resultaat behoorlijk toegankelijk en groovend. En Freddie Hubbard (trompet, bugel) zorgt voor weldadige warmte tussen de soms hoekige paden die Hills piano kiest. Geremasterd door de man die 't indertijd zelf opnam: Rudy van Gelder.
"Weinig musici van zijn formaat zijn zo stelselmatig genegeerd of onderschat als de op 2de Kerstdag 2011 overleden saxofonist, fluitist, pianist en componist die zijn eigen brug bouwde tussen de traditie en de avant-garde, en daarmee meerdere generaties beïnvloedde. Na leerjaren en een conservatoriumstudie begon hij in 1959 vrij te improviseren, vaak geïnspireerd door beeldende kunst. Hij maakte één plaat met Miles Davis, "In Tokyo", maar veel belangrijker zijn de platen die hij in de jaren '60 maakte voor Blue Note, toen dat label de grenzen van de jazzconventies verlegde met gematigd experimentele jazz: geen volledige abstarctie maar wel meer vrijheid, gebaseerd op nieuwe, flexibelere structuren. Niemand kende de regels zo goed als Sam Rivers, die de moeilijkste akkoordenschema's in iedere toonsoort kon spelen, en niemand kon ze daarom met meer autoriteit overboord gooien." "Tenor saxophone player Bill Barron (1927-1989) possessed an original voice - not revolutionary, but unique in its way. Live At Cobi's comes from a pair of late '80s concerts Barron gave not long before his death. Presented here is a live gig by a briefly reunited Barron Brothers Quartet. Bill and his pianist sibling Kenny jointly led a group from 1968 to 1974, recording all too infrequently but establishing themselves as one of the top echelon fraternal teams in jazz. Bassist Cecil McBee and Kennys Sphere colleague Ben Riley complete the rhythm section, contributing mightily to the overall passion and explosiveness of the performances. Barron is sometimes shortchanged as a Coltrane disciple. In his accompanying notes, critic Mark Gardner corrects this misconception by asserting Barrons advanced harmonic concepts as precursors to Tranes own. "The spirit of John Coltrane looms heavy over the proceedings of this project, where saxophonists Brecker, Liebman and Lovano commit to disc the occasional grouping that they have participated in since '96. A trio whose collective whole is clearly greater than the sum of the parts, representing an uncompromising ensemble that gets more exciting and adventurous as the one hour set progresses. Making it easy to differentiate the players by placing them in specific aural positions, what becomes increasingly apparent over the course of the programme is exactly how influential Coltrane has been on all three players. And yet, that being said, each player has taken that influence and developed something distinctly personal and unique. There is absolutely no mistaking each player, regardless of where they are positioned in the mix.
