Broken Wing

'Chet Baker recorded many albums in Europe during his final decade. This hard-to-find LP matches his trumpet with pianist Phil Markowitz, bassist Jean-Francois Jenny Clark and drummer Jeff Brillinger for a date in Paris. Chet sings on "Oh You Crazy Moon" and stretches out on trumpet during a fresh repertoire that includes "Broken Wing," Wayne Shorter's "Black Eyes," "How Deep Is the Ocean?" and Baker's own "Blue Gilles." Even with his chaotic lifestyle, most of Chet Baker's recordings are worth acquiring and Broken Wing is better than average'. (Barnesandnoble).

Blue Room : The 1979 VARA Studio Sessions In Holland (2023)

"In 1979 nam Chet Baker, onberekenbaar vanwege zijn heroïneverslaving, 2 radiosessies op in Hilversum voor het programma Nine O’Clock Jazz met Edwin Rutten als opnameleider. De sessies leken verloren, totdat Frank Jochemsen ze voor het Nederlands Jazz Archief opduikelde. Een vondst van jewelste, omdat het complete sessies betreft die ook nog 'ns met sublieme geluidskwaliteit zijn. In april 1979 speelde Baker met het pianotrio van Phil Markowitz, waarmee hij toen veel in Europa optrad. Baker zingt en speelt fluweelzacht op de voor hem typerende lyrische toon. Markowitz neemt soms wel erg de tijd voor zijn eigen niet al te spannende pianospel. Rutten koppelde Baker 7 maanden later aan de Nederlandse begeleiders Frans Elsen (piano), Victor Kaihatu (bas) en Eric Ineke (drums). Baker was de bladmuziek vergeten, waardoor veel van het improvisatietalent van Elsen afhing. Maar alle vier spelen ze hier geweldig. Compassion The music of John Coltrane (2017)

"In 2007, for the 40th anniversary of John Coltranes death, BBCs Jazz On 3 commissioned a tribute from sax virtuosi Dave Liebman and Joe Lovano, embracing the hard-bop Coltrane of the late 1950s as well as the anthemic free-jazz master he became. Resonance releases those tapes 10 years later, 50 years after Coltrane's passing. Liebman had to assemble a hastily modified version of his Saxophone Summit band (Phil Markowitz is on piano, the wonderful Billy Hart on drums), but the collective passion is palpable. Liebman and Lovano rip through Coltranes boppish Locomotion as a two-tenor tussle; Lovanos rugged tenor and Liebmans ethereal soprano sharply contrast on a segue of "Central Park West" and the rapturous "Dear Lord"; Coltranes world musicianship is evoked by the Spanish theme of "Olé"; and theres a prayerlike ecstasy to the freeform title track.
