Paul Hindemith (Hanau, 16 november 1895 - Frankfurt am Main, 28 december 1963) was een Duitse componist, altviolist, violist, muziekpedagoog, organist, muziektheoreticus en dirigent. In Frankfurt am Main is het museum Hindemith Kabinett aan zijn werk en leven gewijd. Zijn oeuvre is heel uitgebreid, bevat meer dan honderd composities en raakt alle genres aan. Hoewel hij een vurig verdediger van eigentijdse muziek was, voelde hij zich nooit aangetrokken tot de dodecafonie. Hij heeft ook verschillende theoretische werken geschreven, waaronder Unterweisung im Tonsatz uit 1937, waarin Hindemith diverse 'systemen' aanbiedt waarin hij de spanning van intervallen, harmonie en melodiek analyseert en tot componeertechniek verheft. "These interesting works are robustly muscular, intellectually inventive, stylistically modern but still more or less tonally centered. Together they show a composite of Hindemith as a young, a mature, and an old man. The early quintet (1923) written for the neo-Brahmsian ensemble of clarinet and string quartet is probably the toughest piece to sell, but clarinetist Ulf Rodenhäuser does a superlative job of making its austere expressionism sound lyrical. The mature septet (1948), scored for the unique combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, bassoon, horn, and trumpet, is a sort of latter-day super-virtuoso serenade, and the performance here is impeccable. The late octet (1958), written for the pseudo-Schubertian ensemble of clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, two violas, cello, and double bass, is austere yet accessible, and the players combine the lyric with the virtuoso in a way that warms the piece's chilly severity." De symfonie "Mathis der Mahler" wordt gevolg door Symfonische metamorfosen over themas van Carl Maria Weber van dezelfde componist. William Walton, op zijn beurt, ging aan de slag met muzikaal materiaal van Hindemith. Dit "Variations on a theme by Hindemith" besluit deze CD.
"Listening to Paul Hindemiths earlier, dance-inspired piano works such as the 1922 Suite and the Op. 19 Tanzstücke, I always wonder if a wind or brass ensemble would better suit the composers clotted pantonal harmonic language. Be that as it may, Toros Cans outstanding pianism makes a swinging case for the 1922 Suites Boston and Ragtime movements and manages an eloquent and floating Nachtstück. In addition, Can turns the five Tanzstücke into a vertiable and well diversified mini-drama, with plenty of dynamic and character contrast. Ditto for the Second Sonatas long, singing lines at the start of the first movement and throughout the central Lebhaft (grander and more waltz oriented than usual). At the same time Can observes the composers woodwind-like phrasing (first-movement second subject, the concluding Rondo) with colour and heft." "Béla Bartók en Paul Hindemith waren al jaren vaste gast in het Concertgebouw maar schitterden door afwezigheid toen hun vioolconcerten daar in première gingen in 1939 en maart 1940. De fameuze violist Georg Kulenkampff moest het laten afweten en de als entartet bestempelde Hindemith wist via Zwitserland weg te komen.
