"In 1979 nam Chet Baker, onberekenbaar vanwege zijn heroïneverslaving, 2 radiosessies op in Hilversum voor het programma Nine O’Clock Jazz met Edwin Rutten als opnameleider. De sessies leken verloren, totdat Frank Jochemsen ze voor het Nederlands Jazz Archief opduikelde. Een vondst van jewelste, omdat het complete sessies betreft die ook nog 'ns met sublieme geluidskwaliteit zijn. In april 1979 speelde Baker met het pianotrio van Phil Markowitz, waarmee hij toen veel in Europa optrad. Baker zingt en speelt fluweelzacht op de voor hem typerende lyrische toon. Markowitz neemt soms wel erg de tijd voor zijn eigen niet al te spannende pianospel. Rutten koppelde Baker 7 maanden later aan de Nederlandse begeleiders Frans Elsen (piano), Victor Kaihatu (bas) en Eric Ineke (drums). Baker was de bladmuziek vergeten, waardoor veel van het improvisatietalent van Elsen afhing. Maar alle vier spelen ze hier geweldig. Apart from My Funny Valentine (sung by Baker in his mouthful-of-dough whisper) the engaging themes are by the classy Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi and saxist Maurizio Giammaco - embracing smoky ballads and luxuriously-voiced but melodically ingenious hard-bop. The fast Giammaco sometimes sounds in almost unseemly haste compared to the languid Baker, but the latter is captivatingly supple on the swinging Brown Cat Dance, leaning casually against the beat, and sounding as if he has enough ideas for twice the solo." De Braziliaanse arrangeur, pianist en componist Rique Pantoja werkte in 1980 mee aan het album Chet Baker & The Boto Brasilian Quartet. Toen Chet Baker in 1985 op het Braziliaanse Free Jazz Festival speelde nam Rique Pantoja het initiatief voor het project Rique Pantoja & Chet Baker. "Recorded live in Norway in 1983 but not released commercially until 2000, Quintessence, Vol. 2 offers a rare chance to hear them co-leading a quintet. One wishes that Getz and Baker (who are joined by pianist Jim McNeely, bassist George Mraz and drummer Victor Lewis) had been able to put their personal differences aside and play together more often, for the two are a highly appealing combination on standards that range from "It's You or No One" and "I'll Remember April" to Billy Strayhorn's "Blood Count," Gerry Mulligan's "Line for Lyons," and Sonny Rollins' "Airegin." Getz and Baker are both swinging, yet they swing in a consistently melodic fashion and remind us that while they had impressive chops, they didn't feel the need to beat listeners over the head with them. "This 1986 release finds the legendary trumpeter/singer at the end of his career. However, his inimitable style remains lucid and expressive. On this date, Baker plays a varied program, including uptempo Baker favorites "But Not for Me" and "If I Should Lose You." Baker was also one of the great balladeers of his generation, and even here, at the end of his life, his trumpet playing is unmistakably lyrical and "cool" on the soft-spoken and plaintive version of "You Can't Go Home Again." His mournful phrasing on the bossa nova-tinged "Arboway," highlights the trumpeter's fondness for breathy playing in the lower register of the instrument. A funky version of Cole Porter's "Love for Sale" is a unique feature on this album, but even more exceptional is Baker's version of "Send in the Clowns," featuring Van Morrison on vocals.
