"Rounding out Ama Tu Sonrisa is a tune that pits Middle Eastern music vs. Latin music in an uncommon segway of cultural music "feels"- another unique contrast piece, and a few ballads/more contemplative pieces: "Wayne's Lament" (actually, a suite form) "Forward Motion" and "Somewhere." "Peace, Love and Light" is a catchy latin piece that will invigorate those who were captivated by Hart's Latin facility as shown on "Ven Devorame Otra Ves", featuring Claudia Acuna on vocals. Hart is definitely claiming some ground with these latin excursions of his. Also, we should not forget to mention Antonio's dedication to a childhood saxophone idol; the namesake tune "Grover Washington Jr." This is a nice, thoughtful, actually- sweet groove cut that sounds like well, what smooth jazz should sound like in an ideal world. " The last of trumpeter Roy Hargrove's recordings to feature his longtime altoist Antonio Hart also includes pianist Marc Cary, bassist Rodney Whitaker, drummer Gregory Hutchinson and guest spots for the tenors of Branford Marsalis and David "Fathead" Newman, plus trombonist Frank Lacy and organist Jack McDuff. Hargrove (still just 22) was already on his way to being one of the better hard bop-based trumpeters in jazz, as he shows on group originals, James Williams' "Alter Ego," Wayne Shorter's "Pinocchio," "Milestones," and "The Things We Did Last Summer." "Duane Eubanks was in his late 20s when he made his recording debut as a leader with My Shining Hour, a hard bop/post-bop date that recalls early to mid-1960s Blue Note. Although derivative and not overly original, the music is well executed and generally satisfying. As a trumpeter, Duane Eubanks favors a tone that falls somewhere between Miles Davis and Clifford Brown-influenced trumpeters like Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard. Eubanks swings plays passionately, but on some of the more introspective material, he almost sounds like he could be playing a flugelhorn. Though Eubanks' interpretations of "I Love You" and "Dear Old Stockholm" are competent, the CD's most memorable moments come when he embraces his own compositions. The melancholy "Lonelyism," the congenial "Can't Wait 'Til Dawn" and the moody "Clairvoyance" show Eubanks to be a thoughtful composer who doesn't simply write lines -- he writes melodies." Januari 2009 live opgenomen in de fameuze Birdland in New York, trakteert Holland met vijf blazers, één vibrafonist en één drummer, de luisteraar op een zevental bijzonder mooie en spannende composities in een pakkende post-bop stijl met hier en daar vleugjes free-jazz en funk. Heel vernieuwend is dat anno 2010 misschien niet meer en het gros van de nummers is ook zeker niet nieuw, maar de speelvreugde en kwaliteit is hier absoluut top." Uit 1993. De altsaxofonist eert altist Adderley en trompettist Shaw. Hier is Darren Barrett trompettist. Niet alleen stukken van hen, ook wat eigen werk. Erg fijn plaatje met opwindend spel van indrukwekkende, per nummer andere cast.
