Acolytes all of the late Paul Motian, Bro, who made his ECM debut on the drummer's Garden of Eden (ECM, 2006) and Lovano, who goes back nearly four decades with Motian's many creative iterations, lead this album a meditative investigation of the collective soul. "De vroege twintigers trompettist Ian Cleaver en tenorsaxofonist Gideon Tazelaar behoren al een paar jaar tot de grote beloften in de jazz. Ze studeerden in New York en hebben een liefde voor klassieke jazz gemeen. Heel fijn dat ze op een dag in augustus vorig jaar hun krachten gebundeld hebben voor een sessie in de Amsterdamse Electric Monkey Studios samen met Felix Moseholm (bas) en de van Brad Mehldau bekende Jorge Rossy. Het repertoire bestond uit stukken van onder anderen Duke Ellington, Cole Porter en Misha Mengelbergs. In drie stukken doet altist en mentor Benjamin Herman mee. Het lijkt dan wel alsof het duo even extra gas geeft. Hun fraaie, diepe toon krijgt nog meer reliëf. En als in Titoro de band met basklarinettist Joris Roelofs tot sextet wordt uitgebreid krijgt de muziek echt vleugels. Dit sprankelende Volume 1 is hopelijk slechts een begin van een mooie reeks. Tazelaar en Cleaver vinden elkaar moeiteloos, spelen prachtig maar moeten nog een echt eigen stijl vinden." (Volkskrant)
