In oktober 2010 overleed geheel onverwacht, in zijn slaap, toetsenist T. Lavitz, vooral bekend geworden via Dixie Dregs. Op dit album, een van z'n laatste grote projecten, speelt hij met enkele Dixie Dregs-maten (o.a. Steve Morse) en jazzrockkanonnen als gitarist Frank Gambale en drummer Dave Weckl muziek die de ene keer refereert aan Dixie Dregs (jazzrock met onbestemde country & western-feel), de andere keer dieper de jazz duikt. Weckl zorgt voor een stevige rockdrive, maar opvallend genoeg is alle muziek geheel akoestisch. En dat van mannen die we vooral kennen van elektrisch werk. School of the Arts is different from every album I've ever done as a leader," says Lavitz. It's utterly infectious jazz-fusion with aspirations toward chamber or classical music, with rock's reckless abandon simmering just under the surface. "This album is from a pivotal moment in McLaughlin's history. This was just after he left Miles Davis' group, but before Mahavishnu Orchestra started, and the music captures this perfectly. McLaughlin's technique had not progressed to "Mahavishnu" perfection yet, but the music has that rock drive. It all grew out of sessions featuring McLaughlin and Larry Young jamming with Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Miles (and Billy Rich on bass). None of that material with Hendrix is officially released, but "Devotion" is arguably one of the finest acid rock albums ever. McLaughlin is on fire, using fuzzboxes and phasers, over Larry Young's swirling Hammond B-3, with Billy Rich and Buddy Miles as the rock-solid rhythm section. If you dig McLaughlin's solo at the end of "Right Off" (from "A Tribute to Jack Johnson"), then this is the album for you.
