"These days, George Benson (born March 22, 1943, Pittsburgh, PA) is often described as a commercial R&B/pop singer who sometimes moonlights as a pop-jazz guitarist. But early in his career -- when Benson was still in his twenties -- the jazz world thought of him as a guitar-playing hard bop/soul-jazz instrumentalist whose primary influences were Wes Montgomery and Charlie Christian. In the early to mid-'60s, Benson was the epitome of straight-ahead jazz -- and jazz purists loved the bop-oriented direction of the George Benson Quartet, a hard-swinging combo that he formed in 1965 (11 years before he enjoyed a major pop breakthrough with 1976's multi-platinum Breezin'). Na een jarenlange pauze, gaat Joe (Joop) van Enkhuizen vanaf 1984 weer platen maken. Hij omringt zich op de podia en vooral in de platenstudio met topmuzikanten uit binnen- en buitenland. Hij maakt platen met Amerikaanse sterren, o.a. pianist Benny Green en bassist Major Holley. Ook gerenommeerde emigranten zoals bassist John Clayton en pianist Horace Parlan weet hij naar de studio te halen. Tekenend voor zijn aanpak is, dat hij in 1986 simpelweg de ritmesectie vraagt van een van zijn favoriete platen: Doin' Allright van Dexter Gordon, uit 1961. Op Joe Meets The Rhythm Section is hij derhalve te horen met Horace Parlan, bassist Rufus Reid (vervanger van de inmiddels overleden George Tucker) en drummer Al Harewood. Dit blijft niet onopgemerkt in The Penguin Guide To Jazz On CD. De recensent oordeelt: 'He has a great sound and plenty of élan - southern-styled tenor, full of bullish good humour, homeboy swing and a bearhug tenderness on the slow ones.
