Gitarist geweest bij de Violators, ah, zeggen zij het die het kunnen weten, de band van Kurt Vile. Inderdaad. Maar daarvoor en daarna vooral als bevlogen gitarist actief in een bijna met de hand gekozen niche tussen Amerikaanse en deels ook Britse folkmuziek, rock, de blues van lang vervlogen jaren en de blues zoals we die kennen van Ali Farka Touré en Tinariwen. Hij weeft de repetitieve klanken van de woestijnblues fijntjes in aangename folkrocktracks en dan ineens weet je jezelf in een solo waarin je kunt verdrinken, Neil Young laat groeten. Het luisteren naar dit album brengt ergens het gevoel terug van het voor de eerste keer Dire Straits horen. Niet de band die de hits aan elkaar reeg, maar het gezelschap rond Mark Knopfler in jongere jaren, toen de muziek van de band nog klein was en de liedjes fraaie prenten waren waar je urenlang in kon rond dwalen. Steve Gunn heeft dat op dit album zeer goed op zijn eigen wijze weten te vangen. (Writteninmusic)
