"Milt Jackson made a number of solo albums during his long tenure with the Modern Jazz Quartet, but this long unavailable release, finally reissued on CD, is one of his best as a leader. With young pianist McCoy Tyner and tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, Jackson puts together a great session, kicking off with his hard driving "Sonny's Blues." The leader's percussive but swinging style, plus the potent solos by Tyner and Heath, are all appealing. The only reservation about this CD is the deteriorated condition of the master tape from which it was made; it is rather noticeable on several tracks, though finding a mint copy of the original record is not a viable option for most collectors. De serie van het Jazz Orchestra Of The Concertgebouw, in onder meer het Bimhuis in Amsterdam, de lokatie waar de NTR voor Radio 6 Soul & Jazz de band het meest opneemt, lijkt een aaneenschakeling van hoogtepunten. Klinkend en stralend voorbeeld is het concert van 29 maart 2012, waarbij het orkest de levende legende Jimmy Heath (1926) ontving. De biografie van deze tenorsaxofonist heet niet voor niets "I Walked With The Giants": zo speelde hij in de jaren '50 bijvoorbeeld in het Miles Davis Quintet. De manier waarop de saxofoonsectie van het orkest tijdens het concert de bewegingen en klanken van de nog steeds meesterlijk solerende Mr. Heath volgde, spreekt boekdelen. (bron: NTR)
