Big Band Theory (1993)

Album dat in 1994 werd genomineerd voor een Grammy Award. Alle composities zijn van Carla Bley, met uitzondering van Goodbye Pork Pie Hat van Charles Mingus. "Listeners expecting the rambunctious humor that was present in some of Bley's earlier big band albums will be disappointed, but there is quite a bit of beauty on this set, particularly during the dramatic slow section of "Birds of Paradise" and the strangely episodic "On the Stage in Cages."

""This 4 track CD covers parts of the 1981 tour of Europe. Sound is of good quality even though a few solos start off mike. Stand out track is "Variation on the Misery" with a great solo by Steve Grossman followed with a blistering guitar outing by Hiram Bullock (outstanding support also from drummer Omar Hakim). "Jelly Roll" is another fine track which includes an off-beat vocal by Marvin Peterson along with his fine trumpet work." (Vinyl Word)

Where Home Is (1999)

"Trombonist Ray Anderson's Pocket Brass Band is aptly named, not only because of its size and instrumentation (the other members are Lew Soloff on trumpet, Bobby Previte on drums, and Matt Perrine on sousaphone), but also because the group's sound is so deeply rooted in New Orleans. In fact, with its funky/military drum sound and penchant for ensemble improvisation, the group often sounds like a chamber version of the raucous second-line jazz bands of the past. The result is delightful; Anderson draws from a seemingly bottomless bag of growls, mutters, and shouts, and sometimes threatens to abandon a tune's harmonic structure altogether in order to pursue his tonal vision. But as adventurous as he and Soloff get, their sound is never abrasive; it's too joyful for that. Highlights include Anderson's funky "Bimwa Swing," a barnstorming rendition of Thelonious Monk's "I Mean You," and an insinuating mid-tempo take on Scott Joplin's "Pineapple Rag." Wonderful." "The follow-up to 1986's Something Grand finds pianist Hilton Ruiz using a similar group (including trumpeter Lew Soloff and Sam Rivers on tenor, soprano, and flute), but adding guitarist Rodney Jones and third percussionist Jerry Gonzalez. Ruiz contributed five of the six selections ("Come Dance With Me" is by trombonist Dick Griffin), and the music is advanced Afro-Cuban jazz that moves past bebop; in fact, the nearly 15-minute "Eastern Vibrations" is often quite free. Well worth exploring". (Scott Yanow, Allmusic, 4 1/2 ster).

My Romance (1988)

"Lewis Michael Soloff (February 20, 1944 – March 8, 2015)[2] was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, and actor. He worked with Blood, Sweat & Tears from 1968 until 1973. Prior to this he worked with Machito, Tony Scott, Maynard Ferguson, and Tito Puente. In the 1980s, he was a member of Members Only, a jazz ensemble who recorded for Muse Records. Soloff was a regular member and sub-leader of Gil Evans' Monday Night Orchestra, started from 1983, and trained his ability as band leader. His debut album recording was supported by Gil. He was among a handful of trumpeters capable of playing demanding lead trumpet parts while also contributing improvisational solos and of playing baroque, classical, and later orchestral and chamber music styles, which made him an in-demand session player for commercials and soundtracks."
