Wovenhand originally functioned as a solo endeavor but expanded to include a regular group of collaborators, so it makes sense that in 2023 Edwards released his first solo album "Hyacinth" under his name. That effort retained some of the folk elements but incorporated some electronics and other stylistic influences that broadened his musical horizons, and "Mercurial Silence" pushes even further outwards. The material places an emphasis on thumping beats that have more of a modern hip-hop and electronic feel to them, while retaining the hazier melodies and sweeping instrumentation Edwards is known for. The way that his voice hovers over top of the beats and hazier melodies is entrancing. Sometimes there’s a bit more gravel and grit, while other songs take on a more ethereal tone." Het is de bijzondere mix van folk, blues, rock en roots die het geluid van Edwards al decennia kleuren. De man neemt je in al zijn nummers, op al zijn albums, mee op een intense reis. Gevoelsmatig dwars door de woestijnen van zijn Colorado. Ook zijn eerste solo-album "Hyacinth" staat vol van de donkere methodiek en verwijzingen naar het religieuze. “God gebruikt donkere, agressieve tonen om mijn ziel te raken.” Zo liet hij zich ooit ontvallen. Edwards is geen heel blij mens, en een meester omdat om te zetten in kunst. Zijn immer serieuze inslag is al even vaak zwart als de nacht. Die ondertoon wordt vanavond gelegd door zijn mede muzikant, die met elektronica en tweede stem, precies dat extra geeft dat een band vanavond niet brengt.
