"Meer dan acht jaar lang leidde altsaxofonist Ben Sluijs een van de sterkste jazzkwartetten van België, aan de zijde van pianist Erik Vermeulen, bassist Piet Verbist en drummer Eric Thielemans. En plots was het voorbij. Na vier cds ontbond Sluijs de band: het samenspel met zijn oude maats was iets te vertrouwd en comfortabel geworden. In april 2003 vormde hij een nieuw kwartet met een vrij ongewone bezetting. Geen piano meer, maar een trapezeoefening voor alt- en tenorsax. Sluijs vond een klankbord in Jeroen Van Herzeele, die diens introverte alt countert met een tenor vol testosteron. Hun composities zijn al even uitdagend, vol plaagstoten, vraag- en antwoordspel en kronkelend contrapunt. Deze tandem vindt in de subtiele ritmesectie, met Marek Patrman (Tsjechië) op drums en Manolo Cabras (Sardinië) op bas, een ideale basis. Hun debuut-cd, True Nature, werd uitstekend ontvangen en Somewhere in Between (2006), een broeierige live-cd, demonstreerde hoezeer deze solide groep gegroeid was." (Kunstenpunt Muziek)
"Myriam ALTER is a pianist with a track record out of the ordinary. Classical formation during childhood and teen age she came back to music and namely jazz after nearly two decades of absence. At age 36 she took back, first alone, to the keyboard, before following lessons, which proved to be determining, with John Ruocco and Dennis Luxion, and there after with Hein Van de Geyn. She soon discovered her skills as a brilliant composer with an individual approach to romantic moods. Since then, she leads a quintet in which the rhythm and the soloists respond as well as by motivation as by joviality to the compositions of Myriam Alter the pianist. "Although Myriam Alter can play fine piano, this release is most notable for the many original lyrical melodies she contributed. Other than the closing blues "Flues" (which gives the musicians an opportunity to blow freely), each of the pieces (Alter wrote all ten songs) has intriguing chord changes, themes that are often quite memorable and a purpose. In fact, Alter would be well advised to team up with a lyricist in the future, for one could easily imagine some of these melodies being sung and potentially becoming standards. The Dutch musicians (all obscure in the U.S.) are quite talented. Both trumpeter Gino Lattuca and altoist Ben Sluijs display appealing tones and strong improvising styles while being careful to stick to the original moods of the themes. Also joined by bassist Stefan Lievestro and drummer Jan de Haas, the leader mostly keeps her piano solos brief, and her music ("Flues" is the longest at 6:18) is given concise interpretations.
