"There are a multitude of reasons why Bags' Groove remains a cornerstone of the post-bop genre. Of course there will always be the lure of the urban myth surrounding the Christmas Eve 1954 session -- featuring Thelonious Monk -- which is documented on the two takes of the title track. There are obviously more tangible elements, such as Davis' practically telepathic runs with Sonny Rollins (tenor sax). Or Horace Silver's (piano) uncanny ability to provide a stream of chord progressions that supply a second inconspicuous lead without ever overpowering. Indeed, Davis' choice of former Dizzy Gillespie Orchestra and concurrent Modern Jazz Quartet members Milt Jackson (vibes), Kenny Clarke (drums), and Percy Heath (bass) is obviously well-informed. This combo became synonymous with the ability to tastefully improvise and provide bluesy bop lines in varied settings. "Bags' Groove" belongs as a cornerstone of all jazz collections." "Thelonious Monk was in de vroege jaren zestig twee keer in Nederland. Dit tot groot genoegen van de Nederlandse Monk liefhebbers, die zich tot dan toe moesten behelpen met opnamen van deze enigmatische jazzpionier. Zijn eerste concerten in Nederland op 15 april 1961, in het Scheveningse Kurhaus en het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw waren zo'n succes dat organisator Lou van Rees besloot nog 2 concerten te organiseren aan het einde van de tournee in mei. Op deze CD presenteert het Nederlands Jazz Archief het tweede nog nooit eerder uitgegeven concert van 20 mei 1961 in het Concertgebouw, waarop door de muzikanten vol vuur wordt gesoleerd, en dat bijzonder eindigt met twee solostukken van Monk. ""The Unique" werden gemaakt om Monk met bekend materiaal populair te maken. Toch brak hij pas door met opvolger "Brilliant Corners", met eigen stukken. "The Unique" bevat heerlijk schurend gespeelde standards. Begeleid door bassist Oscar Pettiford en drummer Art Blakey (zo dienend hoor je hem zeer zelden) neemt Monk bij de akkoordenkeuzes zoveel vrijheid dat het vals lijkt. Echter, die schurende, afwijkende akkoorden kloppen natuurlijk als een zwerende vinger. Letterlijk en figuurlijk. De rol van Blakey met zijn roffels en tikken is een feest, net zoals de walking bass van Pettiford. "Memories Of You" wordt een weifelende zoektocht door de akkoorden en daarbuiten. Dat kun je alleen als je je het stuk volledig eigen hebt gemaakt. De akkoorden van "Honeysuckle Rose" zijn zó incompleet gekozen, dat het je verwart, totdat je de lol en durf ervan inziet. Vier albums uit 1953 en 1954 op twee CD's. Die albums zijn op zichzelf weer samengesteld uit diverse sessies uit die periode, waardoor er een woud aan legendarische muzikanten op dit album te vinden is, waartegenover staat dat er ook uiterst transparante solo- en trio-sessies op te vinden zijn. Alle vier de albums werden en worden hoog gewaardeerd door critici. Vooral "Brilliant Corners" werd een absoluut eikpunt in de jazzhistorie.
Plaat uit 1956, essentieel omdat het zo'n goed inzicht geeft in Monk's muziek. De titeltrack was na 35 takes nog niet goed gelukt, vandaar dat-ie bijeengeplakt is uit diverse takes. De spanningen in de band zijn voelbaar in de muziek.
