"Tippett coached the Lindsay Quartet for these recordings of his first three quartets, and the other two were written for them. In a note written for their twenty-fifth anniversary in 1992 he said that in these recordings they were concerned to establish good precedents in matters of style, so that succeeding generations of interpreters start at an advantage. In fact one of the most enjoyable things about these readings is that they are so very characteristic of the Lindsay Quartet."
Geschreven tijdens WO II en bedoeld als aanklacht tegen het oorlogsgeweld en de jodenvervolging. Muzikaal beïnvloed door The Messiah van Handel en Bachs Mattheus Passion. In plaats van koralen gebruikte hij negro spirituals. Deze versie uit 1958 is de eerste uitgebrachte opname van het werk.
In 1992 bracht het Lindsay String Quartet het 5de Strijkkwartet van Sir Michael Tippett in premiere. Tippett en de Lindsays hadden al meer dan 20 jaar een bijzondere relatie en men besloot van deze première ook iets bijzonders te maken. Omdat er een Purcell-quote in Tippetts kwartet zit, nam men Purcell op in het programma. Inspirerende leraren van Tippett waren R.O. Morris en Charles Wood, vandaar dat zij niet konden ontbreken. Christopher Brown levert de welkomsfanfare mét Purcell- én Tippett-quotes.

"Tippett's 3rd Symphony (1972), was conceived as a response to and a commentary on Schiller's Ode to Joy. The 20th century has proven that men are not truly all brothers: acceptance of humanity's dual nature is needed to understand the events of the 20th century. Tippett structures his symphony around Beethoven's Ninth (as well as literally quoting the opening of the Finale), with a sequence of blues numbers with Tippett's own text to replace the Ode. The rest of the symphony is an intriguing alternation of extremely static music with moments of irrepressible energy. Sound quality in this recording is excellent, and the orchestra and vocal soloist perform very well. The other piece on this CD, the Praeludium, is using the same brass complement as Stravinsky's Rite of Spring and is a dramatic and enjoyable piece." (bron: Amazon)
