Max Richter is inmiddels een van de meest vooraanstaande namen in de scene die met de term 'neoklassiek' wordt geduid. Veelal uiterst verstilde muziek die invloeden combineert uit filmmuziek en van hedendaagse componisten als Pärt en Silvestrov (die in reactie op het serialisme juist terugkeerden naar simpele harmonieën). ""Three Worlds" is morose and cryptic, like the best Richter. It begins with Words containing a beautiful church bell and a sample of Virginia Woolf reading. It is tragic, mostly because its difficult to hear outside of her painful suicide letter. The calm piano on In the Garden which follows contrasts completely, as if to comfort those who know the end of Woolfs story. The violin accompaniment is simple, but flowering. War Anthem will be a highlight to those drawn to Richter's more orchestral side. The music pounds until it drops out completely, echoing with the same church bell from square one. Modular Astronomy is the bridge of the record from purely classical to a mix of electronic amongst other styles. Semi-dissonance and echoes recall Boards of Canadas excellent career. From there the album travels back and forth across the familiar ground with mostly glowing results. "Three Worlds" is rewarding as background as well as cognitive listening." Heruitgave, door het prestigieuze klasssieklabel Deutsche Grammophon, van in 2009 al eens door Mute Records uitgebrachte soundtrack bij de gelijknamige film uit 2008. Het album bevat de rustige pianomuziek, vol kalm gespeelde triolen van eenvoudige akkoorden, die we van Richter kennen. Ook niet te missen voor liefhebbers van het werk van Ludovico Einaudi.
Taboo is a dark tale of love and death, treachery and revenge with supernatural undertones, set in pre-Victorian London. Max Richter explains, The score comes directly out of the trajectory of the central character: an avenging dark angel, as unstoppable as fate itself. The show plays as a very dark fairy tale. These aspects (the hallucinatory environment, and the irresistible force of Mr Delaney) are embodied by the two main themes. The first theme is a haunted waltz base on a falling chromatic line called a lament bass. For Taboo I have made a deceptively sweet-sounding version, so that we are lulled into a false sense of security. The second theme is that of our protagonist, Mr Delaney. His inexorable progress is evoked by the perpetual-motion ostinato figures in the orchestra, which pivot around a bass line that moves between the interval of a tritone called Diabolus in musica, because of its destabilising effect on harmony. "Voices is eigenlijk een pacifistisch protestalbum. De componist kreeg het idee om dit werk te maken toen hij hoorde en las over de gruwelijkheden die zich in Guantanamo Bay afspeelden. Voices werd in de loop van zon tien jaar gerealiseerd, en bevat stemmen in meer dan 70 talen die citaten voorlezen uit de Universele Verklaring van de Rechten van de Mens. Je hoort op Voices een strijkorkest met een omgekeerde samenstelling dan wat gangbaar is, met meer contrabassen en cellos. Richter tracht zo hoopvolle muziek te maken uit iets wat in se donker lijkt. Als metafoor kan dat tellen, en net als in het leven zelf toont het aan dat zelfs wanneer je uit een underdogpositie start, je nog steeds kan triomferen. Je hoeft geen voorkennis te hebben om van dit stuk te genieten. Iedereen ter wereld zou dit minstens een keer moeten beluisteren om muziek in pure harmonie met stemmen en talen van over de hele wereld te ervaren." Een verzamelalbum met de mooiste filmmuziek van Max Richter, samengesteld in samenwerking met Max Richter zelf: muziek uit de films Waltz with Bashir, Sarahs Key, Wadjda, Disconet, The Congress en Testament Of Youth. Een 2CD-set die met grote zorg is uitgegeven en voorzien is van zeer origineel artwork dat ontworpen werd door de Scandinavische designer Heidi Gabrielsson. Richter is een van de populairste artiesten binnen wat veelal als het neoklassiek-genre wordt geduid. Verstilde muziek, vaak op pianobasis (maar lang niet altijd) die als het ware een brug spant tussen de muziek van klassieke componisten als Erik Satie en Arvo Pärt en ambient- en New Age-artiesten.
