Christmas was celebrated with particular splendour in the churches and court chapels of seventheenth-century Lutheran Germany. This attractive programme draws together a wide variety of Schütz' choral nmotets and dialogues to form an alternative Christmas Story. As Schütz wrote no purely instrumental music, the sonatas and canzonas are by his associates and pupils. The two virtuosic canzonas by Giovanni Gabrieli are double-choir works with pairs of violins and cornetts supported by trombones; the Usper sonata employs the same isntrumental forces in a fascinating mixture of old and new sonorities.
