Diz And Getz (Verve Master Edition) (1953)

"Dizzy Gillespie was at the peak of his powers throughout the '50s, still the pacesetter among trumpeters. This album matches Dizzy with Stan Getz, the Oscar Peterson Trio and drummer Max Roach. Getz, although identified with the "cool" school, thrived on competition and is both relaxed and combative on the up-tempo explorations of "It Don't Mean a Thing" and "Impromptu."" Getz meets Mulligan in hi-fi

Getz meets Mulligan in hi-fi

Stan Getz and Gerry Mulligan recorded some lasting music in the latter half of 1957. On August 1, they participated in an all-star septet that taped what came to be known as Jazz Giants '58. Their compatibility of the Giants session made this follow-up less than three months later inevitable. In between, Mulligan also formed a studio partnership with Paul Desmond. Producer Norman Granz's decision to pair Mulligan with other saxophonists over the next few years, and the manner in which the material was reissued in the '60s and '70s, have made the present set look more like part of a Mulligan Meets... series than initially intended. Sources reveal that it was Getz who chose the rhythm section, while Mulligan had the idea of swapping horns on the final three titles recorded. (bron: Verve)

Three Classic Albums Plus: Stan Getz And The Oscar Peterson Trio

Allmusic over "Stan Getz And The Oscar Peterson Trio" (1957): "Norman Granz was fond of pairing the legendary drummerless trio of Oscar Peterson with several stars. Granz could not have found a better match than the ripe, mature, and bebopping tenor saxophonist Getz. Music that any mainstream jazz lover can embrace." Over "Hamp And Getz" (1957): "The cool tenor of Stan Getz and the extroverted vibraphonist Lionel Hampton seems an unlikely matchup but once again Granz showed his combining talents. Hampton and Getz really battle hard on "Cherokee" and "Jumpin' at the Woodside". Classic music from two of the best." En over "Jazz Giants" (1958): "Although it is identified mainly with Getz this feels a lot like a Gerry Mulligan session, with Harry "Sweets" Edison perfectly complementing the other horns, supported by Granz' favorite Oscar Peterson Trio and master percussionist Louie Bellson. An album that sounds and feels like some of the best music ever recorded by any of the participants under any circumstances."

West Coast Jazz (1955)

"In 1955 the difference between East and West Coast jazz was a hot topic. The title of this disc was a joke, considering all musicians involved were originally from the East Coast and did not play exclusively in the laid-back cool East Coast style. Getz was in California for filming purposes, where he picked up a week long gig at Zardi's in Hollywood. The band that greeted him featured a great rhythm section: Lou Levy (p), Leroy Vinnegar (b), and Shelly Manne (d), along with Conte Candoli (t). These musicians connected with Getz immediately, having crossed paths previously. Impressed with this lineup, he took them into the studio to record "West Coast Jazz". Generally unlike West Coast jazz of the time, the rapid group interplay with energized bop solos, still stand out particularly on "S-H-I-N-E" and Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia." Coupled with the album's original six tracks, this Verve Master Edition collects several previously released outtakes from these sessions." (Al Campbell, Allmusic)
