De wereld van Girls of The Golden West ligt wat verder weg in de geschiedenis. Maar toch, die geschiedenis was onmisbaar voor het huidige Californië als smeltkroes van culturen. Het was een onwaarschijnlijke verzameling van avonturiers, outlaws, prostituees, Afrikanen, Mexicanen, Zuid-Amerikanen en Europeanen die tijdens de legendarische Gold Rush hun geluk zochten in de Sierra Nevada, het Land van Goud. "John Adams begint tegen de 70 te lopen, maar hij slaagt er verbazend genoeg nog steeds in om zich als componist te verjongen, al produceert hij van tijd tot tijd ook wel muziek die tegen de kitsch aan zit. Zo niet in de twee werken op deze CD, die beide zijn aangedreven door het fabelachtige spel van saxofonist Timothy McAllister. City Noir is een symfonische extrapolatie van het type filmmuziek uit de jaren vijftig, geboren uit de frustratie dat die pakkende klanken eigenlijk altijd na hooguit een minuut weer voorbij waren. Adams slaagt in grootse stijl. Wat een meeslepende muziek is dit, desolaat soms, dan weer luidruchtig, heerlijk bekend en toch niet triviaal. Nu is het nog wachten op een regisseur die een film bij dit stuk wil maken. Het vorig jaar voltooide saxofoonconcert is milder en heeft een jazzy losheid die het behoedt voor de oeverloosheid die bijvoorbeeld Adams' Vioolconcert aankleeft. "Op 15 december 2000 ging in Parijs het El Niño in première, onder regie van Peter Sellars en met muziek van John Adams. In dit kerstoratorium was het verhaal op theatrale wijze in scène met poëzie, zang, dans, mime en video. Al die overdaad zou de toeschouwer al gauw teveel kunnen worden. Voor Peter Sellars raakt deze overdaad nu juist de kern. 'Spirituele zaken kunnen nu eenmaal niet gereduceerd worden', aldus de regisseur, 'omdat ze zich op meerdere niveaus afspelen.' Ook El Niño toont vrouwen zangeressen, danseressen en actrices in uiteenlopende omstandigheden en conflicten. De sopraan Dawn Upshaw, gekleed in een simpel houthakkershemd, zingt de lofzang: 'My soul doth magnify the Lord.' "This 'passion oratorio' is designed by John Adams and his librettist/director Peter Sellars as a companion piece to El Niño (2000), their nativity oratorio. Like that work (and, arguably, Adams' operas The Death of Klinghoffer and Doctor Atomic), The Other Mary hovers somewhere between opera and concert work. Like El Niño too, the text is a patchwork of extracts from both old and new testaments, Hildegard of Bingen, and a variety of 20th-century writers, ranging from Primo Levi to June Jordan. The Other Mary is, Sellars has said, an attempt to 'set the passion story in the eternal present, in the tradition of sacred art', so the narrative constantly merges the biblical past and the world today. The story unfolds from the point of view of Mary Magdalene, her sister Martha and brother Lazarus, who seem to commute between the two time frames, and so create parallels between the story of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, and real 20th- and 21st-century events." "Century rolls was inspired by the sound of player-piano rolls, and the machine age which characterised the last century. Adamss orchestral twittering machine of the first movement pulsates, clicks and tricks the ear as Ax threads through his gleaming chains of solo piano. Were in a world of brash jazz riffs, Nancarrow-inspired high-jinks and dense counterpoint that has long replaced the monomania of minimalism. This is Adams at his most confident, his music at its most resilient. Add to this the wonderful sheen and solidity of the recorded sound, and you have an irresistible package. Lollapalooza was a gift to Rattle, who must have had a riot with it: heir to Bernsteins zesty Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, it should become a regular concert overture. The more involved and in-jokey Slonimskys Earbox pays tribute to the eccentric American lexicographer, and he would have surely approved of its teeming invention and outlandish obsession with scales." "Much has been written about On the Transmigration of Souls, the first major response from the concert music sphere to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and still one of a very few works of art of any kind to have engaged itself on a large scale with that earthshaking event. The general consensus has been that John Adams did an excellent job with a very tough commission. Adams has deployed the basic techniques of his musical language in such a way as to throw his hearers into the maelstrom of emotions that many people experienced in the days following September 11 -- an impressive accomplishment, and one that was even more remarkable in 2002. On the Transmigration of Souls is written for a combination of taped sounds and live performers. The orchestra, as often happens with Adams, is something of a big bystander, moving the singers from one state of mind to another with a few outbursts but otherwise staying in the background."
