Concertregistratie uit 1985, uit de tijd van het album "Night". Abercrombie, zelf (zeker in die tijd) een uiterst creatief en avontuurlijk gitarist, had toen een topbezetting om zich heen: met saxofonist Michael Brecker en vurige ritmesectie Marc Johnson en Peter Erskine maakt hij moderne jazz met een lichte hang naar fusion en jazzrock. Opnametechnisch heeft de DVD qua beeld en geluid de kwaliteit van TV-opnamen uit de jaren '80: zeer acceptabel, maar zeker niet uitmuntend.
"This West Wind album, recorded at various studio sites in Seattle, WA, Portland, OR, Berkeley, CA, and New York City between 1987 and 1994, has Kenny Garrett as the leader, but a closer reveal might more accurately hand that title to David Friesen. The bassist is on five of the nine tracks, in duet performances with John Scofield, Michael Brecker, or Denny Zeitlin, while Garrett does lead the other four selections in larger ensemble contexts. "One of trombonist Nils Landgren's early inspirations was Cannonball Adderley's group. Paint It Blue is dedicated to Adderley with Landgren performing five songs associated with the altoist plus seven originals that pay tribute to Cannonball's bands. Some of the music is in the soul-jazz vein while other tunes (particularly the originals) are more modern, even incorporating a little bit of rap in a couple places. Landgren is a fine trombonist (sometimes a little reminiscent of Wayne Henderson) and he manages to keep up with Michael and Randy Brecker, who in this situation are superior supportive soloists. In de periode voor zijn trieste overlijden op 13 januari 2007 heeft Michael Brecker met heel veel doorzettingsvermogen gewerkt aan Pilgrimage. Deze CD omvat de mooiste muziek die hij ooit opgenomen heeft. Pat Metheny quote: Mike just left us some of the greatest music of his career and of his life. Mikes efforts to get his final message out to all of us which is really what it is, a message will go down as one of the great codas in modern music history. What happened in the studio during those few days in August is impossible to describe. Het lijkt wel of major platenmaatschappijen alleen nog jazzplaten uitbrengen als 't een eerbetoon aan Davis of Coltrane betreft... Buiten dat valt er te genieten van Hancock en vooral Brecker. En de drijvende ritmesectie Patitucci/Blade.
Brecker had Coltrane's ballads in gedachten en dat is vaak te horen aan de gecreeerde sfeer. Productie van Pat Metheny, die ook z'n gitaarsynth nog even inzet. Met Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette Charlie Haden en 2 songs met James Taylor.

Chris Walden is vooral bekend van zijn werk voor de televisie en de film. In Duitsland, en vanaf 1996 in Hollywood. Dit is zijn laatste in Duitsland gemaakte cd die onder zijn eigen naam is verschenen. Chris Walden leidt zijn eigen big band met niet te versmaden toevoegingen door ondere andere Micheal Brecker op tenorsaxofoon en andere solo spelers.
