Opname: 2008. "De gevierde Franse Baroksopraan Véronique Gens heeft een verrassend vervolg gemaakt op haar bejubelde "Tragédiennes" uit 2006. Vol aria's, opgeduikeld in obscure bibliotheken. Ditmaal trokken Gens en dirigent Christophe Rousset de lijn door van Rameau naar Gluck en Berlioz, met daartussenin minder bekende namen als Sacchini, Piccinni, Grétry en De Arriaga. Mocht u zich afvragen wat de niet-Franse namen met de klassieke Franse operatragedies van doen hebben, dan moet u weten dat Parijs eeuwenlang door Italianen werd overheerst. Zelfs Lully was een Italiaan. Hij, Sacchini en Piccinni componeerden keurig Franse tragedies. Rousset groef de bijzondere partituren op. Het viel niet mee aria's te vinden die geschikt waren voor de CD,w ant daarvoor was een gelimiteerde orkestratie nodig. De Berlioz-aria uit Les Troyens is in dat opzicht uniek, want helemaal met houtinstrumenten uitgevoerd. Een uitdaging, ook voor Gens, die het misschien wel het mooiste stuk van de CD vindt." Her lower register has gained in volume and thrust and the top of her voice remains free and clear; her classical line, enunciation, and legato are flawless; her mastery of ornamentation is exquisite. Christophe Rousset leads his Talens Lyriques with great elegance and is not afraid of asking them to attack their strings with enough power to set the "terrible" scenes and awaken the feelings. The French soprano Véronique Gens, joined once again by Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques, continues her exploration of the highways and byways of the French operatic repertoire. It covers the late 18th and 19th century and travels from Carthage and Palestine to the Pyrenees, Tudor England and 16th century Germany, and, alongside such names as Gluck, Berlioz, Meyerbeer, Verdi (Don Carlos, French for Paris), Saint-Saëns (his rarely heard Henri VIII rather than Samson et Dalila) and Massenet, features composers who no longer hold a place on the worlds operatic stages: Gossec, Méhul, Mermet and Kreutzer. Perhaps surprisingly, Gens main emphasis in this recital is on arias written for mezzo soprano, but there have always been darker shades in Gens timbre and French composers of opera created some of their most impressive roles and arias for the deeper-toned female voice.
