Johnson was de nacht van 17 augustus 1957 in grootse vorm, en had een uitstekende groep meegenomen. Eigenlijk staan deze sessies niet op naam van Coltrane, maar op die van trompettist Wilbur Harden. Deze verdween, al vrij snel na deze opnamen, compleet van de radar en bleef obscuur. Niet gek dus dat ze onder Coltrane's naam op CD verschijnen. "Although Harden is a competent player on both trumpet and flugelhorn, his compositions aren't particularly memorable, although they are enjoyable. The primary reason people have sought this music is to plug a gap in their John Coltrane collections. The consistently strong playing of John Coltrane is what makes this set worth acquiring." In een Stockholmse studio opgenomen eerste plaat van de toen 27-jarige pianist Flanagan als leider van een eigen trio, met drummer Elvin Jones en bassist Wilbur Little. Ze speelden in die tijd alledrie in stertrombonist JJ Johnsons groep. De subtiel swingende bopstijl waarmee hij bekend werd is al goed herkenbaar. Het drumwerk van Jones was belangrijk studiemateriaal voor de jonge Han Bennink, zo verhaalde hij in De Volkskrant in een interview ter gelegenheid van z'n 65ste verjaardag. Elvin Jones werd later bekend als de drummer van Coltrane's beroemde sixtieskwartet.
It is easy to understand why Dave Young is one of the most in-demand bassists in Canada. With a fat tone and a gift for melodic solos similar to Ray Brown and Niels Pedersen, Young is joined for a pair of tunes by five different pianists. Oscar Peterson, with whom Young first recorded as a sideman in 1980, contributed a bluesy original ("OP & D") for the date, while he is also more than willing to take a backseat to Young. The bassist plays arco with Cedar Walton in a warm rendition of the venerable standard "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"; this session marked their first recording together. Tommy Flanagan provides an elegant backdrop for Young during "In a Sentimental Mood." The sparks fly in his duet with John Hicks of Benny Golson's "Stablemates." The masterful duet with Mulgrew Miller of the classic bop tune "Hot House" uncovers new facets within this decades-old jewel. (Allmusic.com)

The 13 selections are fairly concise (clocking in between 3-7 minutes apiece) and most of the material (other than "Canadian Sunset," "Yours Is My Heart Alone," "Blue and Sentimental" and Bill Evans' classic "Waltz for Debby") consists of either obscurities or recent originals. A special bonus is that Woods plays his appealing clarinet on three numbers. Highlights include "Charles Christopher" (a tribute to Charlie Parker), "Butter" and Hal Galper's "Just Us.""
