Al in 1975 zongen deze drie country-dames voor de eerste keer samen. In de 'liner notes' zegt Parton dat het een kippenvelmoment was, zó goed matchten de stemmen met elkaar. Als ze eraan terugdenkt krijgt ze er nog steeds 'chills' van. Het zal uiteindelijk tot 1987 duren voor het trio als Trio een album zou maken. Een hit hadden ze al 6 jaar eerder gescoord, met het van The Chordettes en The Andrews Sisters bekende "Mr. Sandman", opgenomen voor Harris' album "Evangeline" in 1981. Twee jaar eerder namen ze al samen "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" op voor Harris' album "Blue Kentucky Girl". "Trio" uit 1987 was zo'n groot succes dat er natuurlijk een vervolg moest komen, ook al duurde dat nog 12 jaar. Op beide albums staat een mengsel van evergreens en nieuw en onbekender repertoire die een prachtig harmonieus klinkende nieuwe jas krijgen. Voor deze heruitgave zijn ze geremasterd en aangevuld met een derde CD: "My Dear Companion", met outtakes en alternatieve versies, plus de twee genoemde vroege trio-opnamen.

Parton wrote and arranged all ten tracks, with songs about love dominating the set list. For someone who has been making records for over 50 years, Parton sounds remarkably good on these sessions; her voice is a bit weaker than it was in her glory days, but the 70 year old singer can still hit her notes comfortably, and her gift for making her stories sound sincere and heartfelt is as strong as ever. And Parton wisely sidesteps the sort of slick production that's the current norm in Nashville, opting instead for a clean, straightforward approach that serves the melodies and stays out of the way of her vocals. In many respects, this sounds like an album Parton could have made in the mid-'70s, before she made her bid to become a cross-genre superstar." Dolly’s nieuwe album hoort bij het gelijknamige romandebuut, dat de country-diva samen met bestseller-auteur James Patterson schreef en dat een dezer dagen verschijnt. Het is het verhaal van een jonge singer-songwriter uit Texas, die naar Nashville vertrekt om daar haar geluk te beproeven, uiteraard gebaseerd op Parton’s kleurrijke carrière. Het album ontstond toen Parton de pagina’s die Patterson voor de roman schreef, doorlas en vervolgens liedjes begon te schrijven gebaseerd op de karakters en situaties in het boek. Ze bleef nauwgezet de verhaallijn volgen en dit album is dan ook de “soundtrack’ van de roman geworden, die echter prima op zichzelf kan staan en zelfs een van Dolly’s beste platen van de afgelopen jaren is. Liedjes als Big Dreams and Faded Jeans en Blue Bonnet Breeze behoren tot de beste nummers die de zangeres in haar indrukwekkende loopbaan schreef. ”Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, and Tammy Wynette are, legends of country music with decades of albums and awards to prove it. And they are very much still kicking on Honky Tonk Angels -- just in case anyone needs a little reminder. You can even hear how much fun they had singing together, setting aside any historic competition and letting their love of country music shine through, each gracefully moving between lead and harmony vocals. As for the song selection, it covers a wide swath of country history from tunes made famous by early pioneers like Ferlin Husky, the Davis Sisters, and Hank Locklin to their own more contemporary compositions. If that weren't enough credibility, Kitty Wells lends her amazing voice to the opening anthem "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels." Pure goodness.
