Ultimately, though, this is an album epitomised by "I Dreamed About Elvis", a goofy new track on which country star Ronnie McDowell warbles through a hokey impression of the titular icon. Al in 1975 zongen deze drie country-dames voor de eerste keer samen. In de 'liner notes' zegt Parton dat het een kippenvelmoment was, zó goed matchten de stemmen met elkaar. Als ze eraan terugdenkt krijgt ze er nog steeds 'chills' van. Het zal uiteindelijk tot 1987 duren voor het trio als Trio een album zou maken. Een hit hadden ze al 6 jaar eerder gescoord, met het van The Chordettes en The Andrews Sisters bekende "Mr. Sandman", opgenomen voor Harris' album "Evangeline" in 1981. Twee jaar eerder namen ze al samen "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" op voor Harris' album "Blue Kentucky Girl". "Trio" uit 1987 was zo'n groot succes dat er natuurlijk een vervolg moest komen, ook al duurde dat nog 12 jaar. Op beide albums staat een mengsel van evergreens en nieuw en onbekender repertoire die een prachtig harmonieus klinkende nieuwe jas krijgen. Voor deze heruitgave zijn ze geremasterd en aangevuld met een derde CD: "My Dear Companion", met outtakes en alternatieve versies, plus de twee genoemde vroege trio-opnamen.
Dolly Parton speelde de hoofdrol in de gelijknamige film en componeerde en zong er 10 liedjes voor. Daarnaast nam ze voor deze soundtrack een nieuwe versie op van haar nummer "Light Of A Clear Blue Morning".
"This is the work of someone who still has fun writing and recording new stuff, and is still putting her heart and soul into her work. Parton wrote and arranged all ten tracks, with songs about love dominating the set list. For someone who has been making records for over 50 years, Parton sounds remarkably good on these sessions; her voice is a bit weaker than it was in her glory days, but the 70 year old singer can still hit her notes comfortably, and her gift for making her stories sound sincere and heartfelt is as strong as ever. And Parton wisely sidesteps the sort of slick production that's the current norm in Nashville, opting instead for a clean, straightforward approach that serves the melodies and stays out of the way of her vocals. In many respects, this sounds like an album Parton could have made in the mid-'70s, before she made her bid to become a cross-genre superstar."
