Fascinating set from three strong and contrasting musical personalities: Norwegian saxophonist, Brazilian guitarist-pianist, and US bassist making purposeful and creative music together on this previously unreleased live recording. Carta de Amor documents music captured at Munichs Amerika Haus in April, 1981. Two years on from the much-loved albums Magico and Folk Songs, the trios improvisational empathy and sensibilities were further honed by experiences as a touring group. Repertoire includes five pieces from Gismontis pen, with the title track heard in two variations, opening and closing this enthralling double album. Also heard here are Garbareks folk song arrangements and an extended, freewheeling version of his composition Spor. Haden brings in La Pasionaria, from the repertoire of the Liberation Music Orchestra and the previously unreleased All That Is Beautiful. "Apart from David Sanborn, probably no living saxophonist has a more recognizable voice than Jan Garbarek. The music (much of which was composed for soundtracks) is quintessential Garbarek, full of world music influences that have characterized his work since the 1970s. Garbarek's resonant, carefully articulated tenor and soprano tone suits the spacious, minor/modal themes. He's as much a singer as instrumentalist. Garbarek also plays digital synthesizers, mostly as string or flute pads underneath the folkish melodies. The record's most notable secondary player is Garbarek's ECM labelmate, the bassist Eberhard Weber, whose lyric sensibility is a virtual mirror of Garbarek's. This is quiet, contemplative music for the most part -- attractive, but not superficially pretty. Its grooves are less celebratory than melancholic. Drawn from jubilee concerts at Stuttgart's Theaterhaus in January 2015 to mark the 75th birthday of great German bassist Eberhard Weber, this is a remarkable live album incorporating big band arrangements of Weber compositions as well as striking new music from old friends Pat Metheny and Jan Garbarek. The concerts centered around 'Hommage', a specially commissioned 35-minute suite by Pat Metheny, with whom Weber had played and recorded back in the 1970s. Featuring Metheny, the SWR Big Band conducted by Helge Sunde, Gary Burton, bassist Scott Colley and Danny Gottlieb on drums, this extended composition is built upon recordings of solo improvisations by Weber, subtly orchestrated by the guitarist. The programme is opened by Jan Garbarek, Weber's associate of many years, with powerful and inventive soprano sax improvisations over loops of Weber's bass. Eberhard played with the Jan Garbarek Group from 1982 to 2007, and their essential compatibility is evident once again in these 'Résumé Variations'. (bron: ECM)
