"De eerste belangrijke rol die voor de Spaanse stertenor Plácido Domingo geschreven werd, was de titelrol in Goya van Gian-Carlo Menotti (1986). De opera portretteert de Spaanse schilder als de speelbal van twee onverzoenlijke rivales, de Spaanse koningin en de hertogin van Alva. Goya is beslist niet Menotti's sterkste opera, maar de titelrol leverde Domingo in 1986 bij de première in Washington zo'n succes op, dat hij besloot het werk voor het Weense Klangbogen-Festival 2004 nogmaals op zijn repertoire te nemen. De technisch voortreffelijke televisieregistratie die toen in het Theater an der Wien gemaakt werd (zoals te vinden op deze DVD - HB), is vooral een 'must' voor de echte Domingo-fan, al moet ik daaraan meteen toevoegen dat de 63 jaar oude tenor hier vocaal nog steeds bijzonder sterk overkomt. De Nationale Reisopera brengt de eenakter "La Voix Humaine" van Poulenc op 22 januari 2011 op de planken. "Well-paired, these two telephone operas benefit from filming, Poulenc's monodrama especially, for the woman, whose nervous system virtually is the opera, comes into close-up for much of the time so that we are brought face to face with her hopes and despairs, her sad subterfuges and blank endurance. The setting is created here with painstaking fidelity, the fading light in that oppressive room externalizing all too credibly the inner desolation. Carole Farley gives a finely acted performance, and Mike Newman's direction is unfalteringly effective. Menotti's jeu desprit remains a charmer. The setting is designed with wit to match the score, and again the producer's hand has a sure touch. Both singers play well to the camera, catching the comedy with a natural flair. "In 1956, The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore, marked an unexpected departure from his earlier naturalistic operas in form, musical style, and subject matter. Menotti described the piece as a "Madrigal Fable," evoking the spirit of late Renaissance madrigal comedies, sets of unaccompanied vocal pieces that together form a dramatic narrative. In addition to a chorus, Menotti expanded the performing forces to include a small instrumental ensemble that provides interludes between the 12 madrigals (and occasionally accompanies them), and 10 dancers who enact the story being told." "Gian Carlo Menotti was een Italiaans-Amerikaanse componist, muziekpedagoog, dirigent en librettist. Van 1923 tot 1927 studeerde hij aan het Conservatorio "Giuseppe Verdi" (Milaan) van Milaan. Hij emigreerde vervolgens naar de Verenigde Staten, waar hij van 1928 tot 1933 zijn studie vervolgde, bij Rosario Scaleri, aan het toen pas geopende Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia (tot 1955 was hij daar tevens compositiedocent). Al gauw maakte hij kennis met een andere componist Samuel Barber, die zijn levenspartner werd. In 1958 richtte hij het Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto op, waar hij naast zijn eigen werken, ook werken van derden regisseerde. Toen er vele jaren later een einde aan zijn relatie met Barber kwam, verhuisde hij naar Schotland, waar hij een herenhuis betrok dat ontworpen was door Robert Adam, een teken van een succesvolle carrière. Menotti was een muzikale duizendpoot. Naast componeren schreef hij ook libretto's, regisseerde hij en leidde operahuizen." (Wikipedia)
