De eerste 5 solo-albums van de voormalige Miles Davis- en Mahavishnu Orchestra-drummer, uit 1973-75, in één set, verpakt in mini-reproducties van de LP-hoezen. Cobham staat bekend om zijn 'explosieve', super-energetische stijl. Luister alleen maar naar zijn bizar snelle roffels, met constante vlijmscherpe attack op het trommelvel. De fans van druk drumwerk komen goed aan hun trekken op deze albums, waarop ook steeds plaats is voor een drumsolo. "Spectrum" en "Total Eclipse" zijn heftige jazzrockplaten die in het verlengde liggen van de eerste twee Mahavishnu-albums. Op "Spectrum" werkt hij dan ook nog samen met Mahavishnu-toetsenist Jan Hammer. Vanaf "Total Eclipse" wordt de muziek funkier en ook breder gearrangeerd, met een flinke rol voor koperblazers. Niemand minder dan The Brecker Brothers zijn hiervoor verantwoordelijk. Het gitaarwerk komt van John Abercrombie en John Scofield. Dat dit allemaal goed tot z'n recht komt is mede te danken aan topproducer Ken Scott (Supertramp, Happy The Man, Dixie Dregs).
"From their Mahavishnu/Devadip days, this recording features Larry Young on organ, Doug Rouch on bass, Armando Pereza on percussion and Billy Cobham on drums. There's some blazing guitar work, but the CD sounds like it was taped on a cassette deck from FM using automatic level control. There's little deep bass or high end above 5KHz or so and you can hear compression kick in all the time. If you can hear past that (and some flutter and phasiness and level irregularities) this is a valuable musical document of some powerful spiritually-driven music from two of the masters of electric guitar (and devotees of Sri Chinmoy, a creative spiritual "guru" who generated seemingly endless streams of poetry, art and music every day) during a period when both were "clean and sober" and channeling their music from a very Coltrane-like consciousness, exemplified by "A Love Supreme" and "Naima." Billy Cobham werd bekend met jazzrockgroep Mahavishnu Orchestra. Hij maakte ook een enorme rij albums onder eigen naam, waarop hij met diverse cracks uit de fusion-, jazzrock- en funkwereld werkte. Zijn eerste eigen album, "Spectrum" uit 1973, is nog steeds zijn meest geroemd, mede om het hypnotiserende "Stratum", later nog gesampled door Massive Attack. Tussen 2002 en 2016 maakte hij in Italië deze 4 albums met de muzikantenfamilie Nicolosi, die daar over een studio beschikt. De titel slaat op de aanwezigheid van diverse vocalisten, ook al bevat de set ook veel instrumentaal werk. De stijl bevindt zich doorgaans aan de funky kant van fusion. Het eerste deel is nog zuinigjes met gasten, maar later komen o.a. orgellegende Brian Auger, Level 42-zanger/toetsenist Mike Lindup, pianist Eumir Deodato, vocalisten Gino Vannelli en Chaka Khan, en gitaristen Stanley Jordan, Frank Gambale en Dominic Miller langs. Veel composities zijn van de hand van de Nicolosi's, maar "Stratum" krijgt ook een nieuwe uitvoering.
"No, you're not in Creed Taylor country yet, but you might as well be, for many of the ingredients that would garnish Benson's albums with Taylor are already present in this often enjoyable prototype. The immediate goal was to groom Benson as the next Wes Montgomery (who was about to leave Verve) -- and so he covers hit tunes of the day ("Sunny," "Along Comes Mary," "Groovin'"), playing either with a big band plus voices or a neat quintet anchored by Herbie Hancock, and the sound is contoured to give his guitar a warm mellow ambience. But the eclectic Benson is his own man, as his infectious repeated-interval rhythm trademark tells us on his self-composed title track, and despite Tom McIntosh's mostly lame arrangements, George's work is always tasty and irresistibly melodic." "Incoming is a little-known Cobham recording from 1989 that was previously only available in Europe; fortunately, it has been released in the U.S. The music here is honest and intense, a severe departure from the fluff being recorded for the GRP label. Rita Marcotulli is a remarkable pianist who not only contributes dazzling solos, but also adds tonal colors throughout. Peter Wolpl's guitar playing is very diverse, ranging from fusion to bebop, all played with conviction. Fans of Cobham's windmill approach to the drums will cherish the introduction to "Caribbean Curry," while "Rhyth-Ma-Tix" is one of his strongest compositions since the early '70s, mostly due to the strong melody. The music here is very dense and will surely provide a worthwhile and extended listen. Highly recommended." (AllMusic)
