Guitarist John Abercrombie who has recorded for ECM since 1974 returns with a second album by his quartet featuring Marc Copland on piano, along with longtime rhythm partners Drew Gress and Joey Baron. Extolling "39 Steps" (2013), the Financial Times said: The emphasis is on subtle intrigue, flowing lyricism and the interplay between the leaders warm, cleanly articulated guitar and Coplands piano with bassist Gress and drummer Baron equally supple and sinewy companions. The same virtues of lyrical melody and harmonic/rhythmic subtlety are apparent with the new Up and Coming, though with even more emphasis on the enduring values of song. Abercrombies liquid phrasing and glowing tone enabled by the thumb technique he has honed since eschewing a plectrum in recent years animate his five originals and the pair by Copland, as well as a take on the Miles Davis classic Nardis done in the spirit of Bill Evans. "Up And Coming" has a twilight atmosphere, with melodic flow the guiding light. (bron: ECM)
"Enrico Rava's 1975 debut for ECM, is a stellar progressive jazz effort from the Italian trumpeter. Rava had spent his formative years working with such artists as Steve Lacy, Roswell Rudd, and Carla Bley, and obviously took much to heart when approaching his own music. This is cerebral, atmospheric, often groove-oriented music that rests nicely in between late-'60s Miles Davis and "Brown Rice"-era Don Cherry with some obvious nods to the melodic jazz of Chet Baker. To these ends, such tunes as the expansive title track and the reflective "Bella" begin with lyrical melodic statements from Rava and slowly build to more serpentine, post-bop segments that push toward free jazz but never quite go atonal. Buoying Rava is an adroit ensemble of John Abercrombie (g), Palle Danielsson (b), and Jon Christensen (d). A ceaselessy inventive guitarist, Abercrombie's knotty, fractured, sometimes distorted playing is a perfect match for Rava and the two often intertwine their lines." This 3-CD set with recordings from 1978 to 1980, issued in ECM's acclaimed Old & New Masters series, returns some historically-important material to the catalogue, namely the albums 'Arcade', 'Abercrombie Quartet' and 'M'. The quartet with Richie Beirach, George Mraz and Peter Donald John Abercrombie's first touring band as a leader was the group in which the guitarist defined some priorities, moving away from a jazz-rock period into a more spacious, impressionistic and original music. Abercrombie and pianist Beirach had a strong musical rapport as improvisers and wrote almost all of the band's book between them. George Mraz and Peter Donald provided imaginative support. For this edition the recordings - produced by Manfred Eicher were re-mastered from original analog sources. It's a first appearance on CD for these discs in most world territories ('Arcade' was briefly available on CD in Japan) and re-release of these titles has been much requested by followers of Abercrombie and Beirach.
