De Bretonse harpist/zanger/multi-instrumentalist is veelal in de weer met Keltische muziek, maar voor dit groots opgezette projectalbum uit 1998 kent zijn muziek geen grenzen. Hij werkte daartoe met verschillende producers en het album werd op diverse plaatsen in de wereld opgenomen met vele prominente gasten. De nadruk ligt daarbij op een verbintenis tussen de Keltische wereld en de Afrikaanse en Arabische wereld - middels muziek. Allen brengen hun eigen muzikale bagage mee. Zo zijn er drie tracks met de Afro-Celt Sound System, zingt de Senegalees Youssou N'Dour twee songs, alsmede de Algerijn Khaled. Ook zijn er bijdragen van de Welshman John Cale en de Schot Jim Kerr (Simple Minds).
"This album -- which, at times, recalls parts of Kate Bush's "Hounds Of Love" -- is also reminiscent of Bo Hansson's "Lord of the Rings", being a musical homage to Marion Zimmer Bradley's Arthurian novel The Mists of Avalon, much as Hanson's was a homage to Tolkien's trilogy. But Stivell's record is not instrumental -- rather, it has lots of songs sung partly in Breton and partly in English. It is essentially a progressive rock album (it could even have charted had he done it in the early-1970's), complete with electronic keyboard-driven passages, and a full rock band sharing space with Stivell's harps, bagpipes and tin whistles. Stivell's voice is something of an acquired taste, but his vocals are supported by a trio of guest singers and a small female chorus." Dit veertiende album van de harpist/zanger en bespeler van nog vele andere muziekinstrumenten verscheen oorspronkelijk in 1983. Het eerste deel van de plaat is onderverdeeld in twee suites en was bedoeld als filmmuziek. Er worden diverse traditionele Keltische instrumenten gebruikt, met terughoudend aanvullend gebruik van moderne elektrische en elektronische instrumenten. De Bretonse meester op de Celtic harp Alan Stivell bracht met "Again" in 1993 zijn 17de album uit. De titel slaat op het feit dat het album geen nieuwe nummers bevat, maar heropnamen van zijn grootste successen uit voornamelijk de jaren zeventig. Het zijn geen slaafse kopieën van de originelen, maar geheel nieuwe, naar de jaren negentig getrokken bewerkingen, waarin invloeden uit progressieve pop en rock zijn binnengesijpeld. Hij heeft daarbij hulp gekregen van bepaald niet de minsten: Kate Bush, The Pogues-zanger Shane MacGowan, de Senegalese zanger Doudou Ndiaye Rose, de Franse zanger Laurent Voulzy en de Bretonse zangers Gilles Servat en Yann-Fañch Kemener. Van het album werden in Frankrijk meer dan 300.000 exemplaren verkocht en het bleek een startpunt voor een nieuwe interesse in Keltische muziek. Prachtig, zeer compleet document van de Frans-Keltische folk-harpist/componist/zanger. Op de drie uur durende DVD staan twee concerten van ieder een uur (uit 2001 en uit 1994), een documentaire en extra's als interviews en videoclips. De CD van 70 minuten is een carriere-overzicht in vogelvlucht, van de vroege jaren '70 tot het nieuwe millennium, met als extra een handvol live-nummers van de 2003/2004-tournee.
"This is a new Alan Stivell, more hi-tech and up-to-date, and not the Breton troubadour of old. But, just in case you're worried, the harp is still there, not everything has been abandoned. But this definitely is new; "Explore" is a disc where there's plenty of programming to backup Stivell and make the record thoroughly modern. That could be disconcerting. But, remember, this is the man who first electrified Breton music, making it into folk-rock all those years ago. What he's doing here is simply an update of that. He dives into the music (all the pieces are his compositions, with nothing traditional) and submerges himself in it. And it's surprisingly successful, thanks to often imaginative programming by Sebastien Guerive. Ultimately, this is a record that's very aptly titled, since it does take Stivell into new territories.
