In navolging van de reissue van "One Nation Under A Groove" is dit de deluxe mediabook-versie van het uit 1979 afkomstige album "Uncle Jam". Het was het elfde studio album van Funkadelic en bevat de 15-minuten durende versie van de laatste hitsingle "(Not Just) Knee Deep" (later baseerde De La Soul "Me, Myself And I" op dit nummer, dat daarvoor ook gesampled werd, HB). Verzorgde 2014-heruitgave. Zonder bonus-tracks, wel met informatief boekje. "Funkadelic's major-label jump brought its version of life more into line with Parliament, though the crucial difference between the two -- Funkadelic's guitars vs. Parliament's horns -- remains intact. Eddie Hazel is missed, but Gary Shider and Mike Hampton do fine work. Whoever peels off the concluding solo at the end of "Comin' Round the Mountain" deserves credit. Similar exercises in feedback can be found on the title track and elsewhere, sometimes great, sometimes timekeeping. The emphasis is on fairly clean jams and rhythms, with more lower-key goofiness than before but still merrily out there. If it's not truly gone and great like "Maggot Brain", it's still good listening. "If You Got Fun, You Got Style" makes for a better chat-up dancefloor appreciation than most. And who could knock the use of the 'there's a place in France/where the ladies wear no pants' melody in "You Scared the Lovin' Outta Me"?" (Ned Raggett, Allmusic)
"The Whole Funk & Nothing But the Funk is a 2005 compilation album by Funkadelic featuring songs recorded for Warner Bros. Records during the band's career with that label from 1976 to 1981. No Funkadelic recordings from any other record labels or time periods are included. The compilation includes two rarities: instrumental versions of "One Nation Under a Groove" and "The Electric Spanking of War Babies" that had originally appeared as B-sides. Funkadelic was an American funk rock[1] band formed in Plainfield, New Jersey in 1968 and active until 1982. "With George Clinton, a humorous phrase could be nothing more than playful tomfoolery, or it could be a double entendre with a deep political meaning. The phrase "electric spanking of war babies" falls into the latter category: it referred to what the funk innovator saw as the U.S. government using the media to promote imperialistic wars. To Clinton, the American media functioned as a propaganda machine during wartime. But whether or not one cares to examine its hidden political messages, "Electric Spanking..." is an above-average party album. It falls short of the excellence of "One Nation Under A Groove" and "Uncle Jam Wants You" and didn't boast a hit single, but amusing funk smokers like "Electro-Cuties" and "Funk Gets Stronger" aren't anything to sneeze at, nor is the reggae-influenced "Shockwaves." This turned out to be the last album produced under the name Funkadelic; when he hit the charts again in 1983, Mr. P-Funk was billing himself as 'solo artist'." Dit derde album van de psychedelische funkrockgroep rond George Clinton wordt algemeen beschouwd als het beste van de band en daarmee een sleutelplaat binnen de (psychedelische en avontuurlijk ingestelde) funk. Het nummer begint met een instrumental van 10 minuten: een diep-en-diep gevoelige gitaarsolo van Eddie Hazel over een minimaal gehouden begeleiding. Clinton had Hazel gevraagd 'te spelen alsof je net gehoord hebt dat je moeder is overleden'. Het is een van de meest meeslepende gitaarballads ooit geworden, die overigens weinig funky klinkt. Met eenzelfde lading als Zappa's latere "A Water Melon In Easter Hay" (van "Joe's Garage") en natuurlijk Weens eerbetoon aan de in 1992 overleden Hazel: "A Tear For Eddie" (van "Chocolate & Cheese"). Voor de rest wordt er natuurlijk vooral stevig gefonkt op de losse, schetsmatige, jam-achtige wijze die we van Clinton-gerelateerde producties gewend zijn, met naast Hazel een voorname rol voor toetsenist Bernie Worrell.
"Wat een ontzettend mooie, ontroerende plaat van een oude Funkateer en al zijn kompanen. Tranen springen me soms in de ogen. En wat nemen ze ontzettend lekker de tijd! Drieëneenhalf uur! Dat gaat van diepdonkere blues tot vuurrode gitaar tot blauwwitte technoklanken tot gifgroen venijn. Wát een luisteravontuur is het!" (Hans Beuzel) Door de grote variëteit in bezetting is het niet helemaal duidelijk wát nu echt nieuw is en wát blijkbaar al jaren op de plank lag. Zo is wijlen Eddie Hazel zelfs in een song te horen. Ook staat aangegeven dat diverse songs voor de (nog niet uitgebrachte) film "Dope Dogs The Movie" bedoeld zijn. Bijzonder zijn de twee songs die met het Detroit Symphony Orchestra zijn opgenomen, waaronder een Four Tops-cover. Een heftiger stijlbreuk halverwege is de heavy rapmetalsong "Dirty Queen", vertolkt door de band God's Weapon. Te gast zijn verder o.a. Sly Stone (een paar keer zelfs, waaronder twee keer als leadzanger), Debarge en oude Clinton-getrouwen als Fred Wesley en Bernie Worrell.
"George Clinton ontwikkelende een geheel eigen geluid, de zogenaamde P-Funk, die vergezeld ging van een eigen filosofie en mythologie. Indirect leverden Clinton en consorten kritiek op de maatschappij, maar verpakten dat in visueel aantrekkelijke shows en pakkende, avontuurlijke en veelal dansbare funk. Funkadelic was op zijn creatieve piek in 1978 t.t.v. dit tiende album. Voormalig Ohio Players-toetsenist Walter Morrison had als nieuwkomer een aanzienlijke vinger in de pap. Zijn invloed is het meest prominent op het disco-achtige titelnummer, waarop zijn synthklanken verweven zijn met een simpele doch infectieuze beat, en "Grooveallegiance", dat je met zijn aanstekelijke soulrefrein gebiedt je over te geven aan de feestende funknatie van president Clinton. Ook het virtuoze gitaarspel van Michael Hampton is prominent. Deze heruitgave is aangevuld met een 3 tracks tellende bonus-EP uit 1978, met daarop een live-versie van "Maggot Brain". Opname uit 1976. Wetende dat Clintons extravagante P-funkshows in die tijd zo vier uur konden duren is 83 minuten een beetje schraal, maar als je het Mothership halverwege de show daadwerkelijk ziet landen op het podium (!) dan vergeet je dat. En in de huiskamer is een kleine anderhalf uur broeiierige jamfunk wellicht voldoende. Hilarisch zijn ook de uitdossingen van de musici: zo loopt (de regelmatig excellerende) gitarist Garry Shider rond als baby, compleet met luiers!
Op 14-11-2009 komt George Clinton & Parliament / Funkadelic naar Metropool Hengelo. "This second album is another example of Funkadelic getting busy and taking everyone with it. The title track itself kicks things off with rumbling industrial noises and space alien sound effects, before a call-and-response chant between deep and chirpy voices brings the concept to full life. The low and dirty groove rumbles along for ten minutes of dark fun, with Bernie Worrell turning in a great keyboard solo toward the end -- if Can were this naturally funky, they'd end up sounding like this. From there the band makes its way through a total of six songs, ranging from the good to astoundingly great. The closing "Eulogy and Light," predates Prince with its backward masking and somewhat altered version of the Lord's Prayer and Psalm 23. This 2005 reissue features excellent remastered sound, a thick booklet, and bonus tracks pulled from original Westbound singles, along with a far-out radio spot." (Ned Raggett, Allmusic)

Clinton's songs are essentially conventional soul songs in the spirit of Motown or Stax -- steady rhythms, dense arrangements, choruses of vocals -- but with a loud, overdriven, fuzzy guitar lurking high in the mix. And when Clinton's songs went into their chaotic moments of jamming, there was no mistaking the Hendrix influence. Furthermore, Clinton's half-quirky, half-trippy ad libs can be mistaken for no one else -- they're pure-cut P-Funk. Never again would the band be this attuned to its '60s roots -- it clearly marks the crossroads between '60s soul and '70s funk.
