"Andriessen conceived this 'film opera' with film-maker Hal Hartley, who not only shot the video footage that is projected during the performance, but also made this film of the production. La Commedia is based on Dante, though by no means as a linear distillation. The tone is wonderfully varied sometimes serious, sometimes exuberant or irreverent matched to a diverse, eclectic score. As always with Andriessen, woodwind and brass outmuscle the strings, while piano and cimbalom give extra bite; there are winding Stravinskian chorales, as well as allusions to three centuries of composers. The performance with Reinbert de Leeuw conducting Asko|Schönberg is superb: Dante's narrations are given to the fabulous Cristina Zavalloni; Beatrice is a soprano, the fearless Claron McFadden, and the monologue by Dante's great-great grandfather Cacciaguida is delivered by the late Jeroen Willems. Het Asko Ensemble is in de jaren zestig geformeerd uit studenten. In 1966 gaven zij het eerste concert onder de naam Amsterdams Studenten Kamer Orkest. Sinds die tijd zijn zij niet meer weg te denken geweest van de concertpodia ondanks roerige tijden. Het uitgangspunt is altijd hetzelfde gebleven: het uitvoeren van nieuwe gecomponeerde muziek op een zo hoog mogelijk niveau. Deze cd van het Asko Ensemble uit 1996 bevat drie werken: "Hallelujah II" van Jan Vriend, "La disciplina dei sentimenti" van Willem Boogman en "The last diary" van Klas Torstensson. Met o.a. het octet "Anaktoria" van Xenakis, dat op 21 januari 2011 door het Nieuw Ensemble wordt vertolkt in het Muziekcentrum in Enschede. Hier wordt het vertolkt door een ander Nederlands top-ensemble, dat inmiddels is opgegaan in ASKO-Schönberg.
