Duty Now For The Future ; New Traditionalists (1981)

Het tweede en vierde album van de Amerikaanse new wave-groep, uit 1979 en 1981 op één CD. "One of new wave's most innovative and (for a time) successful bands. Devo took its name from their concept of "de-evolution": the idea that instead of evolving, mankind has actually regressed, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society. Their music echoed this view of society as rigid, repressive and mechanical, with appropriate touches - jerky, robotic rhythms; an obsession with technology and electronics. Their second album "Duty Now..." found them bringing keyboards into the forefront, adding a new level of irony to their "little minds through big technology" philosophy. On "New Traditionalists", apparently deciding that America's comprehension of irony was sorely lacking, Devo largely abandons its sense of absurdity, explicitly stating their cultural views and at times calling attention to their already obvious sarcasm, in case anyone missed the point." (Mark Demming/Steve Huey, Allmusic)

Live 1980 (2005)

"There's no denying that Devo was one of the greatest live bands to emerge from New Wave, as their quirky sense of humor translated perfectly to the stage, with a variety of props, costumes, and projection screens. Thid DVD is the visual proof. Recorded at a show at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA (just before "Whip It" raced up the charts), this complete-set, pro-shot performance. This is the Devo period right before they became perhaps a bit too obsessed with electronics, as the quintet appears to be at its in-concert peak throughout. With only three albums out at this point, there are quite a few interesting tracks that will be of interest to hardcore fans: "S.I.B. (Swelling Itching Brain)," "Secret Agent Man," "Be Stiff." That said, all the pre-1981 Devo classics are here as well: "Whip It," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," "Freedom of Choice," "Jocko Homo," "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA." Out of the various live Devo DVDs out on the market, Live 1980 is by far the best yet." (Greg Prato, Allmusic)
