Tchaikovsky has also featured prominently in Lang Langs career - most notably in his international breakthrough at age 17 performing Tchaikovskys first piano concerto at Ravinias Gala of the Century with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and subsequent first recording on Deutsche Gramophone a few years later. "De Chinees-Amerikaanse componist Tan Dun omschrijft de muziek die hij maakte voor de film van Feng Xiaogang als: Monteverdi ontmoet Bartók ontmoet rock n roll ontmoet Chinese opera ontmoet Peking Opera. De film is een adaptatie van Shakespeares Hamlet, gesitueerd in 10de eeuws China, en gaat over liefde en haat, eenzaamheid en geluk. Het is een verhaal vol tegenstellingen. Dit gegeven kenmerkt ook de muziek, met een belangrijke rol voor pianist Lang Lang. Westerse harmonieën worden gecombineerd met oosterse folkritmes en omlijsten donderende drums een waaier van symfonische kleuren. Intrigerend zijn de door twee zangeressen gebrachte Chinese melodieën, die daarbij fraai worden begeleid door citerspeler Yuan Li. Tan Dun is als componist een bouwer van bruggen tussen oost en west en oud en modern. Met groot gevoel voor avontuur, zo blijkt." (C.
