"Opnamen uit 1966/67, toen iedereen al heel wat minder geïnteresseerd was in wat Little Richard deed. Ten onrechte: geweldige muziek." (Heaven) ""While Little Richard Penniman is well known for his Specialty, Mercury, Veejay, and Modern recordings, he is little celebrated for these wonderful sides recorded for Okeh in 1966/67. The Little Richard on these sessions is a seasoned R&B singer whose feet are deeply rooted in modern-era Southern soul. For Okeh, Little Richard recorded devastatingly fine versions of "Function at the Junction," "I Don't Want to Discuss It," Berry Gordy's "M-O-N-E-Y," "Poor Dog," "Hurry Sundown," and Sam Cooke's "Well All Right" to mention a few. To help him pull it all off - this was seen as a last-ditch survival effort for the singer - his sidemen for these dates include Johnny "Guitar" Watson, Larry Williams, Eddie Fletcher, and Glen Willings: a crack studio band if there ever was one." "A 3 disc set; Groove Maker is comprised of 3 CDs, one of which contains no Jimi Hendrix content at all! The other two are made up of very early Hendrix stuff, mainly when he was a sideman. The first disc supposedly features Jimi playing guitar for Little Richard.Pretty good Little Richard tracks, but you didn't pay for Little Richard, you paid for Jimi. Disc 2, subtitled Classic Sessions, is a little better and features some tracks with Jimi performing with King Curtis and a few tracks, mistitled, from the jam at the Scene Club; the one featuring Jim Morrison, among others. Disc 3 features Jimi back when he was a session player with Lonnie Youngblood. Quality is okay for the most part, though disc one seems to come from an LP. But as it doesn't feature Jimi at all, who cares right? :) If you're ready to take the step from Hendrix fan, to Hendrix fanatic, these recordings will eventually enter into your collection."|
Als de lijvige 'Specialty Sessions' (6CD's) je teveel is heb je hier op 1 CD 25 van z'n mooiste songs: de beste 1CD-compilatie die er van hem te vinden is. Met natuurlijk 'Tutti Frutti', 'Rip It Up', 'Lucille', 'Heebie-Jeebies'.
Ze speelden samen toen de mythe over de grootste successen heen was en de legende nog een legende moest worden, begin jaren zestig dus. De jonge Hendrix nadrukkelijk onopvallend in de begeleidersrol, Little Richard bezeten als altijd. Curieus.
