De Britse metallegende haalde alles uit de kast om hun zwanenzang tot een gedenkwaardig album te maken. Succesproducer Tom Allom (verantwoordelijk voor Screaming For Vengeance en Defenders Of The Faith) werd teruggehaald en gekoppeld aan moderne succesproducer Andy Sneap. Het resultaat mag er zijn want Firepower klinkt lekker fel, glashelder, vertrouwd en toch ook modern. Het titelnummer is een brok energie dat uit de startblokken schieten: felle riffs, scheurende solos, een pompende ritmesectie en natuurlijk de uithalen van Rob Halford. Ongelooflijk wat die man op zijn oude dag nog kan brengen, niet voor niets is hij nog steeds The Metal God. DVD-set van een offshoot van het inmiddels bekend veronderstelde Classic Rock Productions. Een groep Britse (hard)rockjournalisten, die we inmiddels kennen van vergelijkbare documentaires over o.a. Black Sabbath en Thin Lizzy, bespreekt de geschiedenis van de band rond zanger Rob Halford middels korte analyses van alle albums, tot aan de terugkeer van Halford in 2005 (hij was immers enige tijd vervangen door de uit een Judas Priest-coverband afkomstige Ripper Owens). Tussendoor hoor je korte fragmenten en hier en daar zie je wat live-beelden - puur ter illustratie. De fragmenten zijn expres zo kort gehouden opdat er geen rechten betaald hoefden te worden. Interessantst zijn de interviews met de producer van enkele van de meest legendarische Priest-platen, de bandleden komen zelf niet aan het woord. DVD2 is korter en bevat 5 live-opnamen uit de eerste helft van de jaren '80, gemaakt tijdens grootse openluchtconcerten in Amerika, o.a. het immense van Live Aid bekende stadion van Philadelphia.

"In 1979, Judas Priest was growing more and more influential. And as the 1980s progressed, it would become crystal clear that the British headbangers -- who influenced everyone from Iron Maiden to Metallica to King Diamond -- had every bit as great an impact as fellow British headbangers Black Sabbath. One of the Priest's strongest albums, "Killing Machine", AKA "Hell Bent for Leather" cannot be described in anything less than glowing terms. Although gothic themes are present on such treasures as "The Green Manalishi (With the Two-Pronged Crown)" -- originally recorded by Fleetwood Mac -- "Evil Fantasies," and "Before the Dawn," the album generally isn't as dark or morbid as earlier JP-albums. But musically, the band is as aggressive and brutally intense as ever. The two-guitar attack of Glenn Tipton and K.K. "Having reinvented themselves as an arena metal act with the hugely successful "British Steel", Judas Priest naturally opted to stay the course with "Point of Entry", keeping things simple while adding a bluesy boogie in places, a sound they hadn't really attempted in quite some time. However, where "British Steel"'s simplicity was an effective reworking of the band's sound, "Point of Entry"'s songs aren't always up to par, making its less well-crafted tracks sound like lunkheaded, low-effort filler. When Point of Entry works, it works well -- "Heading Out to the Highway," "Solar Angels," and "Desert Plains," for example, are great, driving hard rock songs. Even if "Point of Entry" is somewhat disappointing overall, it does have enough good moments to make it worthwhile to diehards and fans of the group's more commercial '80s output.
