Het steeds van samenstelling wisselende fusion-collectief Snarky Puppy rond bassist Michael League is vooral bekend van virtuoze instrumentale fusion en jazzrock. In 2013 zette men met een groep volvet klinkende soulzangeressen (waaronder Lalah Hathaway, de dochter van Donnie) dit programma in elkaar. Op North Sea Jazz 2014 werd een groot deel ervan gebracht, waarbij 3 zangeressen elkaar afwisselden in lead- en achtergrondpartijen. Lalah kwam voor de toegift ook nog opdraven: die was toch al met andere bands op North Sea Jazz. "De reputatie van het collectief uit New York is rijzende. De Maas, de één na grootste zaal op het festival, is bij het begin van het optreden al helemaal volgelopen. De zangeressen worden ieder 2 nummers in de spotlight gezet. De set swingt, schuurt en groovet aan alle kanten. Dit familie-diner smaakt naar meer." "Snarky Puppy is oorspronkelijk afkomstig uit Denton, Texas en speelt spannende instrumentale jazzfusion. Een nieuw album van collectief Snarky Puppy is altijd weer een belevenis. Zeker vanaf het doorbraak-album ‘GroundUP’ uit 2012 heeft het geesteskind van bassist Michael League de wereld vaak versteld doen staan met hun verfrissende, innovatieve en zeer muzikale kijk op muziek. Het nieuwe album heet ‘Empire Central’ en telt maar liefst 16 tracks. ‘Empire Central’ werd in de loop van acht nachten opgenomen voor een live-in-studio publiek in Dallas’ Deep Ellum Art Company. ‘Empire Central’ bestaat uit geheel nieuwe tracks die sterk beïnvloed zijn door en een eerbetoon zijn aan de stad waar de groep werd geboren nadat ze werden gevormd tijdens hun studie aan het legendarische jazzprogramma van de University of North Texas. Bukuru Celestin is a Music Lab student who is originally from Burundi Africa and moved to the United States in 2008. Bukuru writes, records and performs gospel music in the Afrobeat style. He is often joined by his sisters, Furaha, Elvanie, and Ephrasie who sing background vocals on many of Bukurus recordings and live performances. Through Jefferson Centers Music Lab and a number of generous grantors, Bukuru has just completed recording a full length album with the jazz/funk group Snarky Puppy. Throughout the process Bukuru and Snarky Puppy presented a series of lecture and demonstrations throughout the community that highlight the creative process of this amazing collaboration.
