Arriving in an era dominated by synth pop and gloomy post-punk, The Smiths eponymous debut was the beginning of a new era. Johnny Marrs inventive song writing and ringing guitars were catchy and melodic and were made all the more original by Morrisseys vocal style and lyrics. Although The Smiths continued to improve over the course of their career, the songs here are vital and alive, making sure that their debut remains startling and exciting to this day.
With producer Stephen Street, the Smiths created a subtly shaded and skilled album, one boasting a fuller production than before. Morrissey and Marr laboured hard over the songs, working to expand the bands sound within their boundaries. In doing so they created the classic tracks I Started Something I Couldnt Finish, Girlfriend in a Coma, Stop Me if You Think Youve Heard This One Before, and I Wont Share You. This, the highest charting of all their albums, easily offers a summery of the bands considerable strengths.
"The amount of posthumous Smiths-compilations may seem a bit excessive considering the group's rather concise catalog, containing just four studio albums and singles rounded up on three singles compilations. That's a lot of repetition but this double-disc deluxe edition of "The Sound of the Smiths" is the best of these posthumous overviews. The single-disc -- which is the first disc of the deluxe set -- is the hits disc, containing every cut from the 18-track 1995 compilation Singles and expanding it with five cuts all dating from the mid-'80s. As a Smiths-basics goes, it's first-rate, an introduction and summary that's compulsively listenable. The second disc splits the difference between a rarities compilation and a "more of the best" collection of album tracks, rounding up non-LP singles, B-sides and a bunch of great Smiths songs. It falls short of being the long-awaited collection of Smiths rarities, the absence of which remains a mystery, but it's the best stab at one to date." (S.T. Erlewine, Allmusic)
"The Queen Is Dead" is the Smiths great leap forward, taking the band to new musical and lyrical heights. Opening with the storming track, the album is harder rocking record than anything the band had attempted before. Johnny Marr has created here a wide range of guitar styles that provide a musical bed for Morrisseys best set of lyrics. From which is crafted some of their finest, most affective songs, particularly The Boy With The Thorn In His Side and the epic There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, two masterpieces that provide the foundation for a remarkable album.
With their second proper album "Meat Is Murder", The Smiths began to branch out and diversify, while refining the jangling guitar pop of their debut. The Headmaster Ritual and I Want the One I Cant Have are fine elaborations of the formula they laid out on the debut, while Rusholme Ruffians is an infectious stab at rockabilly. Such was their creative thrust at this point; they were seen as the most important British band since Joy Division. Above all though, there was no other British group making music quite like this in 1985.
Braziliaanse DVD-uitgave van een opname die in 1985 door The Old Grey Whistle Test werd gemaakt van een optreden uit de "Meat Is Murder"-tournee in 1985. Interessant, omdat er geen officiële live-DVD van de band is verschenen en er wel nooit een reünie zal komen. De opname van een minuut of 40 laat af en toe behoorlijk chaotische taferelen zien. Zo krijgt de bij vlagen uitzinnig jodelende Morrissey een bloem in zijn oog, waarna de band het nummer in kwestie instrumentaal afmaakt. Bij de toegift staat het hele podium vol dansende fans, die het Morrissey opnieuw bij vlagen onmogelijk maken om normaal te zingen, terwijl Johnny Marr overigen onverstoorbaar door weet te spelen. Als bonus bevat de DVD twee TV-show-playback-optredens.

"Na het uiteenspatten van de groep in 1987 verschenen er talloze al dan niet nuttige verzamelaars, maar de meest essentiële zag al het licht toen de band nog gewoon actief was. "Hatful Of Hollow" (1984) verscheen in een periode dat Morrissey en co. bijna bizar productief waren en ook nog eens twee singles uitbrachten die niet op een regulier album verschenen: "William", "It Was Really Nothing", "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" en "Hand In Glove". Die singles, plus een berg B-kanten en sessie-opnames, vonden hun weg na dit album dat al een maand(!) na het titelloze debuutalbum in de winkels lag. Veelzeggend is dat een aantal van die B-kanten al snel uitgroeide tot fanfavorieten. Nog steeds kunnen ze tijdens recente solo-optredens van Morrissey op veel enthousiasme rekenen van het publiek. In 2000 zette het toonaangevende Britse muziekblad Q dit album op nummer 44 in zijn lijst met Beste Britse Albums Aller Tijden. Niet gek voor een 'kliekjesverzamelaar'." (Lust For Life)
