"There are plenty of Native American compilations, but unfortunately most of them are skewed to the New Age/spiritual end of the market. This, which includes a number of cuts from the Canadian First People, is much truer to reality. Yes, there's flute and yes, it's R. Carlos Nakai, but his duet with slack key guitarist Keola Beamer is a thing of very pure beauty. There's a good variety of music including some unexpected items, like Blackfire, normally out-and-out punks, taking on a more traditional feel in "American Indian Movement Song," and the reggae of Casper Loma Da-Wa, a reminder of just how global roots reggae has become. Tradition is important, but traditions evolve and take on colors from other cultures, so a country song and some norteño seem to fit in perfectly well here, too. The bonus CD, from Pura Fé, adds a different thread, a mix of Native American music and blues, one that forms a surprisingly natural combination." Van Alison Krauss is een song uitgekozen uit de tijd dat ze nog meer zuivere bluegrasspaden bewandelde dan tegenwoordig. In het boekje staat een bio over alle artiesten op de CD. "Born out of the tradition of the old Southern ensemble string bands of the 19th century, bluegrass is no older as a genre than rock 'n' roll is, and both were born when the amplification of instruments became widely available in the '50s. What gives bluegrass the feel of being an older music form is the continued use of the old string band tunes, speeding them up, giving them lift, and reinventing them over and over again, so it probably should come as no surprise that two of the biggest highlights on this set of bluegrass performances are versions of old traditional songs, Peter Rowan's take on "Man of Constant Sorrow" and Sam Bush's rendition of "Diamond Joe." "Cajuns have a distinctive cuisine and music. Jean-Pierre Tzaud of Playasound who recorded this album contributed liner notes in which he treats the Cajuns as if they were merely transplanted Frenchmen and not the products of a rich gumbo of ethnic influences. Worse, he does not bother to tell us the name of the groups or the individual musicians playing on the album. Disgraceful. The first group, which plays on about eight tracks, is the best. Their rhythms are incredibly infectious, their ensemble rich and well filled out, their lead singer pleasant if not stellar. Their best song is their first, "Les Haricots Sont Pas Sales" ("The Beans Are Not Dirty") which you'll want to play over and over. The second group has a slower, thinner sound and a hokier vocalist; they sound like something from a carnival. One of their numbers, "Diggy Diggy Lo," picks up the pace and is quite fun. Het altijd liefdevol en nauwkeurig te werk gaande heruitgave-label JSP heeft op vier schijven 100 historische cajun-opnamen verzameld. En dan niet de meest voor de hand liggende, maar meer zeldzame. De verzameling opent met accordeonist Joe Falcon. Die was in april 1928 verantwoordelijk voor de allereerste cajun-opnamen. Vier maanden later zat hij opnieuw in de studio en we horen 5 opnamen uit die augustus-sessie. Veel andere artiesten zijn ook met meerdere tracks vertegenwoordigd. Amédé (ook Amedie) Ardoin, vaak 'de Robert Johnson van de cajun' genoemd, zelfs met 14. De belangrijkste cajungroep uit de jaren '30, Hackberry Ramblers, is met 16 tracks vertegenwoordigd. "Zydeco and Cajun are the premier cultural expressions of the spirited and hardy people of southwest Louisiana. While the two styles have some similarities, they are also quite different. Een verzameling Angelsaksische, vnl. non-Keltische folk uit vnl. Engeland en de VS. De track-voor-track-uitleg is van Melody Maker-journalist Colin Irwin. Er is een onderverdeling gemaakt per CD: CD1 heet 'Roots' en belicht de jaren '50 en '60 (en occasioneel de jaren '40). Uit de VS o.a. Woody Guthrie en Leadbelly, uit Engeland o.a. Ewan MacColl (nee, hij was géén Schot) en Anne Briggs. Uit Ierland Sweeney's Men en uit Schotland Malvina Reynolds. CD2 heet "Folk Rocks!" en belicht de 'folk boom' vanaf midden jaren '60, waarbij overigens lang niet altijd gerockt blijkt te worden. De CD bevat op Bob Dylan na Engelse folkies en bands als Pentangle en The Humblebums (met Gerry Rafferty). En hier ook een mespunt Keltische folk middels de Ierse act Finbary & Eddie Furey. CD3 bevat nieuwe ontwikkelingen en moderne crossovers. Ook hier enkele Keltische krenten (o.a. Shooglenifty) tussen de vnl. Engelse pap van o.a. Eliza Carthy en de personificatie van het concept van deze CD-set: de Brits-Amerikaanse Kieron Means.
