"The Bonzos' third album is a bit of a retreat from the cosmic anything-goes atmosphere of their second ("Doughnuts in Granny's Greenhouse"), slanted much more heavily toward their vaudevillian trad jazz roots. Perhaps that's because Viv Stanshall and Neil Innes, who dominated the second album, contribute only three tunes here. Still, it's never less than entertaining and has some stellar moments, like the psychedelic African safari of "Ali Baba's Camel," the skit "Shirt" (another clear forerunner of Monty Python), and the British hit single "I'm the Urban Spaceman," produced by Paul McCartney. This 2007 expanded reissue of Tadpoles contains five bonus tracks. As with all the 2007 Bonzo reissues, there are very good liner notes by Neil Innes, whose intro may be recycled through all five discs, but that repetition is redeemed by his fine track-by-track commentary, which covers the bonus cuts as well." "The 1967 debut album by the the greatest satirical British pop band of all time. Their first effort is far more tentative and tamer than their second and third albums, when they hit their stride by expanding their musical and topical recklessness. The Bonzos, after all, did not begin as a rock band, or even a pop band, but as a somewhat vaudevillian comedy outfit that owed a great deal to British music hall traditions. This album may be low-key, but that's not to say it doesn't retain a good deal of charm. The humor is extremely dry, subtle, and British, leaning more toward their trad jazz roots than the churning London pop/rock scene. It nonetheless includes a few great moments: the deadpan jazz vamp "The Intro and the Outro" (wherein a smarmy MC introduces a bevy of historical figures in a show band, including Adolf Hitler on vibes), the film noir satire "Big Shot," and their vicious send-up of "The Sound of Music."" Tweede album van de Britse humorrockgroep rond Neil Innes (later o.a. in The Rutles), uit 1968. Eigenlijk alleen te vergelijken met The Mothers Of Invention. Deze tweede, waarvoor het tussenvoegsel 'Dooh Dah' uit de naam werd geschrapt, geldt als hun beste (van de 5 albums). De kreet 'We are normal and we want our freedom', die op dit album is te horen is ook op Love's "Forever Changes" te horen: wie pikte dat van wie? Overigens is de groep in 2007 na meer dan 30 jaar weer bijeen en zijn er plannen voor een nieuw album. Vivian Stanshall, met Innes de belangrijkste songschrijver in de band, maakt dat niet meer mee: hij overleed al in 1995. (zie Heaven 6/2007)
Na The Mothers Of Invention wellicht het best geslaagde mengsel van rockmuziek en humor (1965-1970). Belangrijkste leden waren Viv Stanshall en Neil Innes. Dielaatste zat later in de Beatles-persiflage The Rutles (hij schreef alle songs).
Dit vierde album van Britse cabaret(muziek)groep verscheen vrij snel na het derde ("Tadpoles"); misschien wel té snel, want het wordt als minder album in de bandhistorie genoemd. In de informatieve liner notes heeft Neil Innes het over het 'meest introspectieve' album. Interessante constatering voor een toch in de eerste plaats op de lach gerichte groep, die ook dit keer weer een afwisseling aan sketches en liedjes biedt, die sterk aan Monty Python doen denken en soms vrij hilarische parodieën blijken. De bonustracks zijn ditmaal geen band-aangelegenheden maar min of meer solo-uitstapjes uitde "Keynsham"-tijd van verschillende leden.

Neil Innes clearly made every effort to be sure that this historic occasion would be recorded with all possible attention to detail. Stephen Fry has a jolly time doing a few key numbers in his stylish lyrical spoken word - nailing the very complex rap of "Rhinocratic Oaths" with aplomb, and adding his trademark touch of class to "Sport (The Odd Boy)" and "The Sound of Music". Adrian Edmondson is spectacular in "The Strain" and does a great job with "My Pink Half Of The Drainpipe", "Tent" and "Mr Slater's Parrot". The dynamic nature of their late frontman Vivian Stanshall is proven in that four highly talented and very different artists have been enlisted to take his role in this gala.
