"Captured in 1975, On a Friday Evening is an engaging and deeply intimate album that finds pianist Bill Evans and his trio in performance at Oil Can Harry's in Vancouver, British Columbia. Recorded by radio host Gary Barclay, the album was initially broadcast on Barclay's CHQM jazz show before languishing unheard for the next 40 years. Fully restored, this 2021 archival release finds Evans backed by one of his best latter-career rhythm sections featuring bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Eliot Zigmund. Radio broadcasts of live concerts were not unheard of in the '60s and '70s, and On a Friday Evening works as a nice companion album to the similar 2017 radio restoration On a Monday Evening, which featured the same lineup and some of the same tunes. That said, On a Friday Evening is an even better sounding restoration and truly represents the intricate group dynamics and virtuosity they'd developed on tour together." (Allmusic)
"On this strictly instrumental penultimate Chet Baker session for Riverside, the trumpeter was supported by an all star cast, including Pepper Adams, Bill Evans, and Kenny Burrell. Each of them makes important contributions. Adams' baritone sax solo on "Alone Together" is one of the high points, while Herbie Mann and Bill Evans make their presence known on several cuts. Baker possessed one of the most melodious trumpets in jazz, compelling in its simplicity. Rarely extending his range above a single octave, he nonetheless had few peers when it came to slow, romantic ballads, which make up the playlist here. His characteristically soft approach is heard to good effect on "It Never Entered My Mind," where he works with the guitar of Kenny Burrell. Burrell and Baker also collaborate on a moving rendition of "September Song." Begin 1979 overleed Harry Evans, broer van de pianist. Bill was zwaar aangeslagen en belandde in een emotioneel en lichamelijk slopende tredmolen, die uiteindelijk op 15 september 1980 tot zijn eigen dood zou leiden. Die periode van intens verdriet leverde evenwel wel prachtige muziek op. Met zijn toenmalige trio (bassist Marc Johnson en Joe LaBarbera) vlamde hij een laatste keer in de studio en deed hij enkele veelgeroemde tournees, waarvan gelukkig het een en ander is vastgelegd. Bekend is bijvoorbeeld de set in Parijs gemaakte live-opnamen. Deze in december 1979 gemaakte opname van de Italiaanse TV was echter tot 2006 nooit uitgebracht op beelddrager. Ondanks het feit dat zijn meer dan 20 jaar lange heroïne-verslaving én daarbij nog een alcoholverslaving inmiddels tot een zorgwekkende gezondheidtoestand hadden geleid, heeft zijn pianospel daar nooit onder geleden. Zijn spel is (ondanks zijn opvallend gezwollen handen) intelligent, gevoelig, superieur getimed en virtuoos en z'n ritmesectie is uitstekend.

"Recorded in 1962, this album shows a different side of the Bill Evans Trio than that all-ballads album. Here, the eight selections have a much more mid- and even up-tempo flair. Israel appears more comfortable in these settings to be sure, as he is the kind of bassist that relegates himself deeply into the rhythm section, sublimating himself to the pianist. In Evans' own words, the band's desire was to "provide a more singing sound" in this material. The last recording by longtime bassist Chuck Israels (who had joined the Trio in 1962) with Evans (the tastefully supportive drummer Arnold Wise completes the group), this live set features the group mostly performing lyrical and thoughtful standards; highlights include "I Should Care," "Who Can I Turn To" and "My Foolish Heart." However the most memorable piece is the 13½-minute "Solo - In Memory of His Father," an extensive unaccompanied exploration by Evans that partly uses a theme that became "Turn Out the Stars."" "What's better than a Bill Evans Trio album? How about a Bill Evans trio album on which the bassist is Percy Heath, the drummer is Connie Kay, and the leader is not Evans but alto sax god Cannonball Adderley, making the group actually a quartet? It's a different sort of ensemble, to be sure, and the musical results are marvelous. Adderley's playing on "Waltz for Debby" is both muscular and sensitive, as it is on the other Evans composition here, a modal ballad called "Know What I Mean?" Other treats include the sprightly "Toy" and two takes of the Gershwin classic "Who Cares?" The focus here is, of course, on Adderley's excellent post-bop stylings, but it's also interesting to hear Evans playing with a rhythm section as staid and conservative as Kay and Heath (both charter members of the Modern Jazz Quartet). It's hard to imagine any fan of mainstream jazz not finding much to love on this very fine recording." (Rick Anderson, Allmusic)

Twee onderling nogal verschillende optredens van de lyrische pianist die ook op de huidige generatie jazzpianisten van grote invloed is (denk aan bijv. Brad Mehldau, Wolfert Brederode). Tijdens beide concerten ins Eddie Gomez de bassist. Die plaatst zich nadrukkelijk op de voorgrond met een zeer gespierde en melodieuze manier van spelen. Ontzagwekkend zijn z'n soli, in bijv. "Autumn Leaves". Het Oslo'se optreden werd gedaan met een lokale drummer, wat veroorzaakt zal hebben dat er vooral veel standards op het programma staan. In 1971 is Marty Morell al een tijdje z'n vaste drummer. Het feit dat dit trio zo ingespeeld is maakt de weg vrij voor meer lyriek en subtiliteiten. En voor eigen composities, naast een stuk van Evans' voormalige bassist, wijlen Scott LaFaro. Leuk ook om te zien hoe z'n uiterlijk in die 5 jaar is veranderd: in '66 nog precies zo als op de hoesjes van z'n jaren '50-albums, in '71 met artistieke coupe. De beeldkwaliteit van het '66-concert is wat matigjes, dat van '71 is prima.
Het tweede album dat de pianist als bandleider maakte, vlak na z'n vertrek uit Miles Davis' groep. Evans' klassiek beïnvloede pianistiek was al helemaal uitgekristalliseerd. Hij vormt hier een trio met Paul Chambers (b) en Philly Joe Jones (d). De drie stukken voor solopiano zijn echter het meest memorabel, met name het briljante "Piece By Piece". (allmusic)
Een klein jaar voor z'n dood opgenomen, met z'n laatste (zeer sterke) trio, met Marc Johnson (b) en Joe Labarbera (d). Het intuïtieve samenspel benadert dat van de legendarische line-up met Scott LaFaro en Paul Motian (t.t.v. "Live At The Village Vanguard"). Ondanks diens ernstig verzwakte gezondheid, een gevolg van een decennialange heroïneverslaving, was Evans spel nog steeds niet minder dan briljant. Z'n subtiele spel vol vindingrijke harmonieën is schatplichtig aan de Franse Klassieke impressionisten.
