Magyarszovát is de dorpsband van het dorp Magyarszovát in de streek Transylvanië in Roemenië. Transylvanië heeft een omvangrijke Hongaars minderheid, maar maar naast die van de Hongaren is Magyarszovát ook de woonplaats van een groot aantal Roma. Deze Roma komen vooral aan de kost als professionele muzikanten. Ze zijn gespecialiseerd in de traditionele muziek van Transylvanië. Op deze dubbelaar wordt de muziek van de dans Mezöségi gespeeld. In de Mezöségi improviseert het danskoppel de passen en de band de muziek. Een langzaam deel (lassú) wordt gevolgd door een snel deel (Sebes). De dans is een geliefd en vast onderdeel van ieder folkloristisch festival in de streek. (GR Muziekbank)
Transylvanië is het thuis van mensen die het land bewerken. Hard werkende en eerlijke mensen. Door een - in cultureel opzicht - gelukkige samenloop van omstandigheden is het ook een landstreek waar allerlei dansen een thuis hebben gevonden. Laag na laag en alle verschillende vormen zijn bewaard gebleven. Je zou Transylvanië een sprookjesland voor de liefhebbers van folktradities kunnen noemen. Dit album vertelt een aantal van die sprookjes. Met deelname van een drietal solo-zangers en het mannenkoor en dansensemble van het Hongaarse leger blijven de sprookjes spannend tot en met de goede afloop. (GR Muziekbank)

"This is the soundtrack to a documentary by U.S. public T.V. A professional "folk" ensemble, Okros, from Budapest visited the countryside and played with the village musicians. The gypsy and Hungarian populations live together in the villages, so you can't completely separate the music into groups. Nonetheless, a minority of tracks are strongly gypsy inflected, the majority are of a very purely archaic hungarian nature. The singing tracks using the villagers as singers (about half the tracks) I can't abide, but that is not a value judgement. I truly couldn't say whether they are bad singers, or simply singing in a style that is alien to me. I will say the the few tracks where Marta Sebestyen sings, instead of the actual villagers, I like very much. The five archaic hungarian instrumental tracks are superb." (Amazon).

"This is a collection of recordings made by various Eastern European radio stations, that all entered in the Radio Bratislava Folk Music Prize competition. The album begins with a short instrumental piece by a fujara trio from Slovakia. These remarkable end-blown flutes produce extraordinary metallic notes that sound almost synthesized. This is followed by another Slovak piece, featuring solo hammer dulcimer and string orchestra. It is wildly energetic and beautifully melodic. And then there's a fantastic recording of Tuvan overtone-singing. In whole, there is a definite bias towards music from Slovakia. All of these pieces feature soloists (dulcimer, violin or vocals) coupled with string orchestras and/or other folk instruments. Certainly not examples of authentic folk music but they are exhilarating. Other highlights include a trio of offerings from Bulgarian radio including one song performed by the famous Bulgarian Radio & Television Choir. This is a rare and largely overlooked gem."
